Pitches

  • 'Wildish' small camping site on a Mid Wales family farm
  • A mile from Lake Vyrnwy; half an hour's drive to Welshpool
  • Greener Camping Club member site; dogs on leads welcome
The Thomas family has been living at this gorgeous Mid Wales farm for four generations now – and a quick look at the pics should give you a bit of insight into why they love this spot so much. These generous folk haven’t opted to keep their much-loved property to themselves though – instead, they’ve chosen to open up part of it to guests who’d like to immerse themselves in these lovely landscapes. There’s farmland and forest all around, with Lake Vyrnwy about a mile away, so it’s a splendid spot for walks, watersports, wildlife watching and generally chilling out in glorious rural surroundings. Keen to keep the environmental impact minimal, the owners have designed this as a ‘wild-ish’ site – that means you’ll have the laidback vibe of a wild camping experience, but also access to simple facilities such as drinking water, compost toilets and showers. It also means you’ll be able to set your pitch up as you like, with an awning and/or a gazebo, along with a firepit or barbecue for cooking and keeping warm. Dogs are welcome to join you as well, as long as they’re kept on a lead on site. As this site operates as a Greener Camping Club site, you’ll be automatically enrolled as a member when you book a pitch here, giving you access to a range of eco-friendly sites around the UK for the rest of the year. If you’re already a member, make sure to claim your discount when booking.

Local attractions

This part of Mid Wales is all about soaking up the fabulous scenery – perhaps starting with a stroll in nearby Dyfnant Forest (10 minutes’ drive) or a walk along one of the trails around Lake Vyrnwy (five minutes), a manmade reservoir with a Grade I-listed dam. A leaflet available locally details several trails, including one through the sculpture park area. While you’re at the lake you can also pick up permits for fishing, go birdwatching in one of the hides at RSPB Llyn Vyrnwy, or hire bikes from the local café to pedal along the waterside paths and up into the forest. As this is a drinking water reservoir, you can’t swim in it, but there are kayaks and paddleboards to hire from Bethania Adventure (five minutes). Looking a little further afield, you could head into Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park for rides on the Bala Lake Railway (35 minutes) or walks from Dolgellau (45 minutes), or aim towards Welshpool (half an hour) for the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway and Powis Castle and Garden.
