Glasbury river a stones throw away from the campsite

  • Family-friendly Powys campsite on the banks of the River Wye
  • Hay-on Wye and Offa’s Dyke Path 10 minutes’ drive; Hereford 40 minutes
  • Kayak and canoe hire at the adjacent activity centre; café on site
Looking for an action-packed outdoor break with lots of high-octane watery fun to be had? A stay at River Wye Campsite puts you right on the banks of the river at Glasbury-on-Wye. Once there, you can hire canoes or kayaks to paddle downstream, go gorge walking along the Wye, or join in archery and axe-throwing sessions (at an extra cost) at the adjacent activity centre. No problem if your tastes lean more towards culture rather than sporting action, as the campsite is 10 minutes’ drive from Hay-on Wye, making it a clever base for visiting the famed ‘book town’ – especially during the the annual Hay Festival of Literature and Arts, held in late May and early June. Handy on-site facilities include a shower block with plenty of hot water (great for easing tired muscles after a day kayaking on the Wye), a washing-up area and plenty of parking space, either in the car park or next to your tent. Keen to upgrade your alfresco cooking skills? You’re welcome to use free-standing barbecues but please ensure they are raised off the grass to prevent any damage. Packs of kindling can be bought on site, and there’s a covered seating area for communal picnics. If you’d rather someone else took care of the catering, pick up soft drinks, ice cream and tempting cakes in the Paddlers Rest Café – you can order full English breakfasts in there too. On weekends throughout the summer months, the site has regular pop-up trucks with street food and regular live music. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join in the fun, and there are woodland walks direct from the pitches to keep them exercised too. The owners ask that they are kept on leads while on site, please.

Liked: Close to river for walks

Disliked: Another visitor played loud blasting music on the radio until 10pm. I know that's down to the inconsiderate visitors but maybe a rule or reminder should be in place.

Liked: Really nice spot. Took two blow up Paddle boards and could launch right near the campsite. We went down stream to Hay on Day 1 and got the bus back.

Was really good fun even the low water level and rapids did not stop us! They have a bar serving different food in the evening.

Campsite is quiet and perfect for a weekend away. Day two went upstream and took in the amazing countryside waving to the friendly locals.

Spent the evening at the bar chatting with the owner with a curry which he kindly ordered for us and picked up.

Just what we needed from a week in work and felt "fairly" freshed on our return. I blame that on the local 1985 lager which went down way too easily!! Thanks!!!

Liked: Great location, near the river Wye and convenient for nearby Hay. The pitch site was nice and flat and the washing up facilities and cafe/bar onsite are a bonus. Check in was quick and staff friendly. Although we didn’t use the canoe hire, I could see this was very popular.

Disliked: The toilet block could do with an update, I had to move cubicle half way through a shower as the timer switch got stuck and no water was coming out. This was a shame as one of the reasons I chose the site was for the shower block facilities. It would also be useful to have a shelf/chair in shower room for clothing and towels. Shelves in the washing area/hooks on back of toilet doors would also be helpful.
This said, however, I would still come back again as the site as so much more to offer.

Need a day off from all the energetic stuff? Treat kids to a day out among the donkeys and alpacas at the Small Breeds Farm Park (25 minutes’ drive), while science buffs might appreciate a chance to peer at the universe through telescopes at The Spaceguard Centre (50 minutes, don’t miss the views over the Welsh hills into Shropshire). Combine sightseeing with history by visiting the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library Exhibition at the Norman cathedral in Hereford (40 minutes), and if the weather’s behaving, have a jaunt around the colourful flower borders at Hergest Croft Gardens (25 minutes).
