  • Wild pitches on a 150-acre working family farm in rural Mid Wales
  • A five-minute drive from Rhayader and 15 minutes from Elan Valley
  • Footpath through the farm; grocery shops five minutes' drive
Heading to the countryside but not quite sure exactly how to spend your break? At Upper Bwlch Farm, a sheep farm set in 150 acres of rural Mid Wales, the set-up is spot on for a peaceful wild camping trip. As well as having meadows with stunning wildflowers, Upper Bwlch Farm has a native oak woodland full of wildlife. At the top parts of the family-run farm, feast your eyes on miles of countryside. All of these areas are up for grabs when you’re pitching up, although to access the top parts of the farm, you’ll need a four-wheel drive or the will to hike. The Elan Valley is just a short drive away for longer hikes, biking trails and other leisurely pursuits. The highest reservoir, Craig Goch Dam, is a 25-minute drive away. Closer by is Caban-coch Reservoir (15 minutes’ drive), where there is a three-hour hike to Craig Goch along an old railway. For the Garreg Ddu loop, a three-hour circular hike, head to Garreg-ddu Reservoir. Pen y Garreg Dam, the final of the four reservoirs, is 25 minutes’ drive away from the farm. If you’re looking for a ramble that requires no car journey to begin, stroll onto the footpath running through the farm. It heads into the stunning local countryside. A stream also runs through the lower part of the farm, adding to the pretty things you can see on site. Remember, this is a wild site, so there are no facilities on the farm. For any missing bits on your grocery list (or to attend the carnival week events in July), Rhayader is five minutes’ drive away. The farm homestead is based down a private lane half a mile from the main road between Rhayader and Abbeycwmhir.

Local attractions

Every year in Builth Wells (25 minutes’ drive), the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show at The Royal Welsh kicks off with its daily agricultural shows. You won’t be twiddling your thumbs outside of the yearly event dates either, as there are historical spots scattered all around the town, from the grassy motte left behind by the old castle to a stone circle and Wye Bridge (built in 1779). Another place to take note of is Llandrindod Wells (15 minutes), which has a market every Friday. It has plenty of pretty spots for a break such as the Temple Gardens bandstand. For golfers, there’s an 18-hole golf course, and for budding historians, it has a couple of museums (including one all about cycling). A day trip to the coast is very much doable here too. Aberystwyth (an hour) has a splendid promenade lined with houses of many different shades, as well as a 13th-century castle and a cliff railway.
