Set on a hill overlooking the Severn Valley is Yr Nyth, a luxuriously appointed shepherd’s hut found in the lush gardens of Broombush Bed & Breakfast. ‘Yr Nyth’ means ‘nest’ in Welsh, and that’s exactly what it’s like – a cosy, warm and welcoming home from home 10 minutes’ drive from Newtown in Powys. Accommodation at this bijou self-catering unit includes a king-size bed (all linens are supplied), which can also be split into singles, a pair of comfy armchairs, a TV and a small dining table. The well-equipped galley kitchen has all you need to prepare simple meals, and there’s a shower in the immaculate ensuite, where towels and robes are also provided. The log burner in the corner of the hut keeps everybody nice and warm, and all logs you need are supplied without further costs. A welcome pack of tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits and fresh milk gets you started upon arrival. Outside, there’s a hot tub with recliner beds from which you can enjoy the lovely views, a barbecue and outdoor seating. The area around the hut is fully decked and there is a private car parking space. Should you wish, breakfast can be booked for an additional cost during your stay and is served 7am–10am, seven days a week.

Local attractions

Wildlife lovers can get their fill of birds of prey at Gigrin Farm (35 minutes’ drive), where red kites come into feed several times a day; there are also several hides for watching the enormous raptors tussle with buzzards and ravens for the food. Nearby, you can get out into the Cambrian Mountains for nature rambles from the visitor centre in Gilfach Nature Reserve (also 35 minutes). Learn something about the history of the region with a visit to the sumptuous rooms, landmark topiaried yew bushes and Italianate gardens at National Trust-owned Powis Castle and Garden (half an hour), or step further back in time with an uphill yomp up to the Bronze Age standing stones at Mitchell’s Fold Stone Circle (35 minutes). It’s only a short walk to the dramatic gorge viewpoint at Devil’s Bridge Waterfalls (45 minutes), or you can take the weight off your legs altogether and climb aboard an historic locomotive to chug through stunning countryside on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway (half an hour).
