  • Adults-only shepherd’s huts a 15-minute drive from Welshpool
  • Oswestry 20 minutes’ drive; Powis Castle and Garden 25 minutes
  • Well-stocked fishing lake; underfloor heating; countryside views
If you'd like your getaway to the Welsh country to include some cosy accommodation and perhaps a lovely lake for scenic strolls or some angling, make your way to West Lake Coarse Fishery and Camping, between Welshpool (15 minutes’ drive) and Oswestry (20 minutes). The adults-only site has a mature, tree-lined lake stocked with carp, tench, bream and more (by the way, remember to bring your own equipment and licence). The accommodation comes in the form of a stylish, well-equipped shepherd’s hut. Sit alfresco on an Adirondack chair with a good book or explore the splendid Welsh countryside. Residents at the lake include colourful kingfishers and flitting dragonflies, so there's plenty to look out for when you're strolling or fishing. Want to hear more about that shepherd’s hut? The bed will be made and ready for you when you arrive, so all you have to do is put the kettle on (tea- and coffee-making facilities come as standard) and relax. There’s an ensuite bathroom with a composting toilet and a shower (as well as a separate toilet block), plus a fan for warm afternoons and underfloor heating for cool evenings. At the end of the day, you and your partner can get together for a spot of stargazing: the site is not lit up after dark (there are only a few solar lights to mark some paths), which makes the constellations in the night sky remarkably bright.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: We stayed at the West Lake Coarse Fishery and Camping in April 2025. From the moment we arrived we was greeted by Michael the owner, who showed us around and gave us all the information we needed for our stay. He provided us with his number incase we needed anything throughout our stay no matter the time. Me, my wife and our dog stayed in one of the shepherd huts close by to one of the beautiful lakes on site. The shepherd hut was incredible and one of the best we have stayed in. The hut had heating including under floor heating as a bonus, very comfortable bed, shower, toilet, bedding & towels provided and electric hob with all the cooking utensils we could possibly need. We was also provided a welcome basket full of goodies which was a very nice touch. They also had onsite toilets and showers with disabled access/wet room too which was all very clean and well looked after. We had an amazing stay here in the hut, it was very peaceful and relaxing. The fishing was great too as you are very close by to the lake. There was 2 lakes to choose from depending on your fishing style and have some beautiful, stunning fish in there. We have found our home away from home and we can’t wait for our many happy returns.

Disliked: Nothing we can think of.

Local attractions

The Hoffman Kiln sits at the heart of the Llanymynech Heritage Area (10 minutes’ drive), where limestone used to be quarried until 1914. A small museum explores the area’s industrial past, or you can stroll through the Local Nature Reserve, a haven for butterflies. National Trust - Powis Castle and Garden (25 minutes) is a hilltop property originally built in the 1200s but much refurbished during the intervening centuries. Elegant interiors are decorated with artworks and tapestries, and there are splendid views of the Severn Valley from the terraced gardens, known for their monumental yew trees. Spreading within a curve of the River Severn, Shrewsbury (half an hour) is home to the waterfront Quarry Gardens, with a lush area of ponds and flowerbeds at its centre. Check out eating options at the bustling Shrewsbury Market Hall, then head to the medieval castle, with its military displays.
