  • Well-equipped shepherd's hut for two in the Cambrian Mountains
  • A 25-minute drive to the Elan Valley; 40 minutes to Borth beach
  • Kingsize bed, and stove in the hut; private toilet, shower and kitchen
It’s a well-equipped place is Plynlimon Shepherd’s Hut: this little Powys rural retreat for two is kitted out with a kingsize bed, an electric woodburning-effect stove and comfy seating. And all the bits that won’t fit in the hut are in the converted stable just next door: a toilet and shower room and a kitchen area with camping stove, coffee machine, kettle, toaster, fridge and freezer. Bed linen and towels are thrown in too – and there’s an outdoor area with patio and seating so you can sit and admire the lovely views around this pretty spot. Need some drinks and snacks to complete that picture? Stop by at the shops in Llanidloes, 10 minutes’ drive away. And it’s probably just as well that so much kit is provided, because it’s likely you’ll want to bring along a fair amount of stuff to make the most of the outdoor activities around the area. Your packing list might include walking boots (for walks in the surrounding Cambrian Mountains or nearby Elan Valley), a mountain bike (for hilly trails in the same areas), fishing kit (for days by the Clywedog Reservoir), beach kit (for outings to Borth beach, a 40-minute drive away)… Getting in and out, or round and about, should be straightforward at this site – it’s just off the A44, so there are no worries about lots of winding your way through lots of narrow lanes to get to your countryside pad.

Local attractions

Out into nature's big backyard, you go… there are river Severn footpaths through pine and spruce trees in Hafren Forest (10 minutes' drive)… stunning waterfalls at Devil’s Bridge Falls (20 minutes)… nature trails around the lake at Clywedog Reservoir (25 minutes)… Some of your other options include Elan Valley (25 minutes), where bike rides along the former Elan Valley railway are rather splendid, or the Red Kite Feeding Station (20 minutes), where you’ll get to be a fly on the wall for the kites’ daily feedings. The beach fans among you might like to take a soak at Borth beach (40 minutes), or tackle the waves head-on with surfing or windsurfing activities. If you time your visit for the right season, the sea will retreat back and reveal a fossilised forest with stumps from old trees (cool, right?). Now, what about some more old sites? Take a tour around the lead mine at Silver Mountain Experience (15 minutes) or get your brains going in one of their escape rooms. Similarly, there are mine building remains at the Bryntail Lead Mine Buildings (20 minutes). From Aberystwyth (35 minutes), you could take a steam train ride on the Vale of Rheidol Railway or have a simpler time shopping, eating out or strolling down the prom.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Perfect hosts, friendly, welcoming and with lots of local knowledge. Brilliant to have own kitchen, loo and shower and one of the main reasons we chose Plynlimon. We didn't realise and were absolutely delighted to find that so many things were so thoughtfully provided, not to mention a scrumptious basket of goodies too. So kind and much appreciated. Everything is provided from a selection of glasses, crockery and pans to tea bags, filter coffee and condiments to lovely, thick towels. Breakfast of local produce ordered in advance and this was absolutely fantastic too. We visited so many local spots, walked for miles each day and enjoyed watching the birds from the decking of the hut and through the windows when it got chilly at night. We loved it and cannot wait to return.
