There are many things that draw people to seek out riverside spots for their hols – you may fancy a bit of fishing, or perhaps you’ve got an eye on the scenic picnic potential, or maybe you secretly (or not so secretly) just yearn to get in for a wild swim… Whichever of the above you’ve got in mind matters not, for they’re all covered at Powys site Riverside Caravan and Camping Park, in little Llangammarch Wells and 15 minutes’ drive from the ancient market town of Builth Wells. As the name intimates, this four-acre park is indeed on the riverside – the banks of the Irfon river, to be more specific. Fishing is allowed on site for those clutching the correct permit, and there’s direct access to the water for those who want to cool their feet with a tentative paddle or take the plunge for a full-on swim. There’s plenty of space for open-air eats too, either a picnic or a cookout at the barbecue area; covered gazebos have also been set up just in case the weather isn’t amenable (and they’re also piled high with handy things like games of giant Jenga, footballs, hula hoops and an electricity supply for recharging your gadgets). Time out in the open air might include watching over the kids at the playground, taking the dog for a walk along the riverbank from the village or around one of the other excellent dog-walking spots locally (there’s a washing machine on site to deal with any muddy pawprints they leave you with) or ambling over to the local pub, 10 minutes’ stroll away. Being in a dark sky area, there's often also some fab stargazing to be had by night.

  • Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.
  • Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Bluebell camping pod

Liked: The site was fantastic. Small and relaxing with a curfew of 10.30. Dog friendly. All the amenities you need. Perfect location for exploring mid wales. Right on the river that can be enjoyed in the summer. Communal fridge and freezer to use and the chance to hire fire pits with marshmallows and BBQ’s too. Clean facilities. Lovely family run site.

Liked: Very beautiful site. The grounds are immaculate and very well kept. Possible the most secure site we have stayed on. Stream is a nice touch although bank is quite high so to steep to let kids paddle in. Great location to travel and explore different areas of wales although not much locally you can find some great hidden gems. An onsite shop would be ideal as nothing close by. Just Something that sells the basics, bread, milk, camping essentials. Site is small so had to travel to give the dog a decent walk but that’s absolutely fine by us as we love to explore. Owners are lovely and very welcoming.

Disliked: Unfortunately the toilet and shower facilities did let this site down. Very cold and dated. Happy to pay for showers but 5 minutes isn’t enough especially when it took 2 minutes to get warm only to be freezing again quickly, water pressure not enough either unfortunately. To pay for the shower you have to leave the cubicle, not ideal unless somebody with you waits outside until you’re ready to get in. Other than that they are very clean.

Liked: Great site, very clean and well kept. Everything was to an immaculate standard for a campsite!
Toilet block clean and tidy, every detail thought of.
Friendly owners, nothing too much trouble. Excellent facilities and service.

Liked: Large flat pitches, big open space for the kids to play. Clean toilets and showers. Friendly, helpful staff. Great location with a lovely river with access for the kids to play in.

Liked: Literally one of the best sites there is.
Danielle and James are so friendly and can’t do enough for you. The seasonal pitches are also so friendly and always say hello. Toilets and showers are very clean. Nice community spirit with all the children playing together. Easily accessible drinking water and electric on pitches. Grey waste and chemical disposal points. Great local walks with dogs and great dog friendly site!

Disliked: Nothing! It’s literally our haven here and we love it so much!

Liked: We Loved this place! So well looked after,clean and maintained beautifully.
Reception lady was so friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The river was stunning and we loved the sound of the sheep in the morning.
Absolutely would recommend this place and will be booking again for next year.

Disliked: Mabe the option for WiFi so we could locate nearby facilities but not essential

Liked: We had a brilliant stay at Riverside. It is a stunning site next to the river and it was very quiet and peaceful. The owners were very helpful and friendly. Showers and toilets were very clean. Also liked the fact that the site was secure as had to have a code to open the gate. Would stay again.

Disliked: Maybe there should be more toilets and showers as the site was full, although it did not affect us, as we showered at 7 am to avoid waiting.

Route directions

Coming along the A483, take the turning for Llangammarch Wells. The best turnoff is either as you enter Garth from Beulah or leaving Garth from Builth Wells. Go down to the bottom of the road and turn right; the site is 100m along on the left, over the cattle grid.

Local attractions

This part of the world has many enticing options for folk who like a good walk or bike ride on their hols: as well as local riverside paths, you might also like to consider setting off for the Elan Valley (half an hour’s drive) to ramble by lakes and waterfalls, or aim south to the trails of the Brecon Beacons National Park. For other outdoorsy days, there’s a fine golf course in Builth Wells (15 minutes) and the chance to see big birds take flight at the Red Kite Feeding Station in Rhyader (half an hour). The Brecon Mountain Railway (an hour) is a great choice for those who’d like to see the scenery at slow pace, and the Dolaucothi Roman gold mines likewise for folk intrigued by what lies beneath their feet. There’s a lot going on throughout the year in this area too – time your trip cleverly to tie in with the Hay-on-Wye Book Festival (45 minutes), the parades of fine beasts at the Royal Welsh Show (20 minutes) or the famed World Bog Snorkelling Championships (10 minutes).
