  • Glamping at a private Ceredigion nature reserve with a nature trail
  • Half an hour’s drive from Aberaeron and the Ceredigion Coast Path
  • Pizza ovens, fire bowls and breakfasts on site; dark starry skies
Gorgeous views by day and dark skies by night… Orchid Meadows, a quiet Ceredigion site, is a splendid spot for those who’d like to unwind and reconnect with the natural world. Set on 25 acres of peaceful nature reserve and with a nature trail, this glamping site welcomes solo travellers, families and groups of friends. The mention of orchids in the name isn’t coincidence – guests can often spot wild orchids around the place, as well as looking out for red kites and buzzards overhead or stonechats flitting through the nearby gorge. At sunset you may well hear the call of the barn or tawny owls… or possibly catch sight of one if you’re lucky. And even if you’re not in luck with the wildlife, you’ll always spot an animal or two around the place thanks to the resident hens and cats. The lack of light pollution around this area means that clear nights bring great displays of starry skies, so settle in with your barbecue or get a blaze going in a fire bowl to stay warm while you admire it all. Alternatively, pick up suitable supplies in Tregaron (five minutes’ drive) and fire up one of the pizza ovens on site for a tasty alfresco dinner. Tregaron also has pubs and cafés, and from autumn through to summer the team at Orchid Meadows can supply breakfast (pre-planned or last-minute). This is a remote location, but its proximity to the A485 means it should be easy to get out and about in the Cambrian Mountains or over to Cardigan Bay. Aberaeron and the Ceredigion Coast Path are half an hour’s drive away, and it’s about 45 minutes to New Quay.

Local attractions

Once you’ve wandered around the site, there are several great places to get out for a longer walk nearby. Cors Caron National Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ drive) is made up of wildlife-rich wetlands and peat bogs, and there are waterfalls and woodlands to explore at Hafod Estate (half an hour). For more wildlife encounters, head to Bwlch Nant yr Arian Forest Visitor Centre (45 minutes) for the daily red kite feeding sessions. Over at the coast, you can board boats in New Quay (45 minutes) to see the Cardigan Bay dolphins, or seek out beaches like Llanrhystud (25 minutes) and Llangrannog (55 minutes). The elegant seaside town of Aberystwyth (half an hour) is worth a visit too. Fancy adding a bit of history to your break? Head to the National Trust’s Llanerchaeron (half an hour), where a villa designed by John Nash sits at the centre of an 18th-century estate with a lake, a rare-breed farm and a walled garden.
