  • Rural Ceredigion site five minutes' drive from Llan-non
  • A 15-minute drive to Llanerchaeron estate; 25 minutes to New Quay
  • Lakeside campfire area; ponies and ducks to meet on site
It’s a proper Ceredigion countryside experience at Carregwen Camping – book a pitch here and you’ll be sharing space with a small menagerie of animals including friendly ponies and a little flock of ducks. This area is popular with wildlife too, so keep your eyes peeled to see what you can spy around the place – the adjoining lake is a particularly fine spot for wildlife watching, so you may like to settle down on the banks for a drink or picnic while on the lookout for passing beasts. There’s a campfire area just next to the lake too, for evenings spent keeping warm and having a chat by the crackling flames. Stays here are a thoroughly peaceful prospect, with quiet rural scenery all around and little by way of noise or light pollution (stargazing evening, anyone?) There’s a pub 10 minutes’ walk away that’s open most evenings, and the little seaside village of Llan-non is five minutes’ drive away for a couple of shops, another pub and a fish and chip shop. Llan-non is also the place to pick up the Ceredigion Coast Path for a stroll along the shoreline; also within easy reach are coastal hotspots Aberaeron and New Quay (this latter the place for dolphin-spotting boat trips). Inland days out might take you for rural rambles, strolls around historic sites or time spent hanging out with more farm animals. Back at base, the facilities have been kept to the essentials, so you’ll have access to toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a shared fridge/freezer.

Local attractions

Walks in this area have a habit of turning up intriguing sights – especially if you head for the areas around the ruins of Strata Florida Abbey (half an hour's drive), Devil’s Bridge Falls (35 minutes) and Dolaucothi Gold Mines (35 minutes). A little closer to home, the National Trust estate Llanerchaeron (15 minutes) makes a lovely place for a stroll too, taking in the walled garden, the farmyard and the John Nash-designed Georgian villa. For more of those animal encounters, take the kids along to play with the pigs, goats and donkeys or scamper about at indoor and outdoor play areas at Fantasy Farm Park (five minutes), or sign up for alpaca walks with Fort Alpacas or Woodlands Alpacas (both 15 minutes' drive). The coast may well be calling around here, of course, so head a little way west for beach days and seafood meals in Aberaeron (15 minutes), dolphin-spotting boat trips from New Quay (25 minutes) or a ride on the Vale of Rheidol Railway from Aberystwyth (half an hour).
