  • On the route of the Cateran Way; Alyth village five miles away
Pure Perthshire peace… that’s what it's all about at Mains of Creuchies Farm, a spacious and scenic property about 15 minutes’ drive from Blairgowrie. There are 800 acres of fabulous rural space here, and pitches are spread around a few different areas, so you’ll never feel crowded in here, whether you’re set up on the banks of the Alyth Burn or in one of the more far-flung moorland areas. With the farm sitting at an elevation of 170-260 metres above sea level, there are also lots of gorgeous views to take in – some of the best are out over the Strathmore Valley towards the Angus Glens and Strathardle. The pitches here are part of a working farm where three generations of the Simpson family live and work, and where all sorts of wildlife lives (deer, grouse, curlews and oystercatchers can often be spotted). In order to have only a minimal impact on all of this, it’s a wild camping setup here – no toilets, no showers, no drinking water, no wifi and no electricity, but lots of quiet open space and the chance to disconnect from modern life for a little while (although there is limited mobile coverage on some networks). Campfires and barbecues are permitted here, and you’re welcome to bring dogs along. There’s a ‘leave no trace' policy in place so you’ll be asked to take all rubbish with you. The local village, Alyth, is five miles away for a supermarket, butcher, cafés and places to eat.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: We loved that we had the choice of where we wanted to pitch up, the host was very welcoming and helpful & showed us the lay of the land.
We picked a lovely wee spot beside the pond where we got a great sunset & the peace and quiet
We got a fantastic sky full of stars in the evening as well.

Disliked: I wouldn’t say I disliked this but more a note to say that this is someone’s home, their farm so there are no facilities , this is more of a wild camping experience
You may also get a little bit of noise from the farm animals but that didn’t bother us

Local attractions

As you can probably imagine from the scenery, this is fabulous walking and cycling country. If you want a good challenge on that front, set out on the Cateran Trail, a waymarked 64-mile circular trail that runs past the farm on its route through Perthshire and the Angus Glens. Something a bit easier on the legs? There are a couple of golf courses in Alyth (10 minutes’ drive) and several others only a little further away. There are also some good places around for fishing – ask on site to be pointed in the right direction. For more rural activities, try the farm tours at Bowland Trails or join a beaver safari with Perthshire Wildlife (both half an hour). Bit of history and culture while you’re here? Take tours of Glamis Castle (25 minutes) and Scone Palace (40 minutes) or head to the art galleries, museums and theatres of Perth and Dundee (both 45 minutes).
