  • Cosy self-contained cabins with firepits, half a mile from Pencaitland
  • Next to Railway Walk path and a bus stop for Edinburgh trips
  • Café, outdoor kitchen and bike hire and storage on site
A cosy cabin where you’ll feel like you’re completely immersed in the splendid Scottish countryside – and yet you’re within easy reach of all manner of walks, beaches, golf courses… and even one of the world’s great cities? If you like the sound of that, let the roads of East Lothian lead you to Rosehip Hideaway, a lovely little glamping site about half a mile from Pencaitland. The village is handily about a 10-minute walk away for a small supermarket and a pub/restaurant, but on site you’ll feel like you’re totally tucked away among rural surroundings. This is a fabulous location for exploring East Lothian – it’s just next to the Railway Walk path and cycle route 196, taking you to Carberry, Penicuik and Glenkinchie Distillery without any need to drive (bike hire and secure bike storage are available on site). Another car-free day out might involve hopping on the bus for the 50-minute journey into Edinburgh from the stop just outside the site. Wherever you roam, you’ll be in for a relaxing time back at your cabin – they’re kitted out with comfy beds (and quality bed linen), an ensuite shower room and a kitchenette. Each one also has its own outdoor seating area, and there’s also a covered communal seating area decked with festoon lights. Each unit also comes with a firepit to keep you warm on chilly nights (the team can provide a basket of logs, kindling and natural firelighters to get you going). The cherry on top of all this? The site has its own café, serving up proper coffees and a varied menu of breakfasts, lunches and baked goodies. There is also an outdoor kitchen with a hob and microwave on site.

Beach Rose cabin

Liked: The cabins were cosy even though we stayed during Storm Darragh! Great spacious hot shower. Very clean, everything felt brand new.
We got the train from Wallyford which has a big park&ride car park then only 10-15 mins into the centre of Edinburgh.
Friendly welcome from Veronica and in the onsite cafe is good too.

Disliked: Maybe a radio would be good?

Peace Rose cabin

Liked: Veroica and her daughter where lovely hosts and the staff in the onsite cafe where friendly and helpful too.

They even emailed and called us when we managed to leave some belongings behind by accident.

The camp was beautifully laid out with lovely plants and flowers and we had a view of some chickens walking back and forth as well as the lovely garden and other lodges.

The beds where so comfortable and the shower was lovely.
Everything was spotless
The heating was on for us when we arrived, everything was well thought out.

Disliked: It could of done with a toaster at least for cooking as with constant rain you could not cook outside on the fire.

We had to travel quite a distance to find a take away in the evening or go out for meals every night because of the lack of cooking facilties.

Local pub The Winton where booked up and the staff member was very abrupt with us for even asking.

We had to travel to Dalkieth for a meal twice.
We came upon a restaurant called the cavalier which was excellent.
I would recommend really lovely staff as well.
Other take aways where in nearby Tranent about 6 miles away.
But at least two where shut and when you just travelled for several hours you don't really want to go out looking for hot food.

From the manager: Hi Lin, thank you so much for the feedback and the lovely review. We did have toasters but had to remove as kept setting off fire alarm and disturbing other guests.
We have a small hut with hob and microwave on site, sorry you didn’t know about this.

The takeaways in Pathhead and Tranent both deliver? I am sorry about your experience at the Winton and I will feed this back as I do recommend to our guests as food is so good but I also recommend people to book in advance.

Liked: Cleanliness. Quiet. Cafe. Lovely bedding. Good shower.

Disliked: Could do with curtains over the blinds to stop draughts. A hair dryer would also be amazing and a radio or speaker.

Chill Rose cabin (pet friendly)

Liked: Great little space, lovely clean and well equipped. Positioned nice and close to Edinburgh but still felt more rural and quiet than staying in the city. Really lovely dog friendly cafe on site and walking routes very close by.

Disliked: We did have an issue with the boiler on our last night but were offered electric heaters and some compensation. No Wifi

Peace Rose cabin

Liked: Lovely lodge, felt very much like home, in a good location, only 30 minute drive outside Edinburgh or you can get the bus and train into Edinburgh! The owner was lovely and helped us with a lot of things like which train station and buses to get etc. Just an all round lovely place and would definitely recommend!

Local attractions

A dram of Scottish whisky is an essential experience – and that’s easily accessed here, as it’s only two miles’ walk or bike ride to Glenkinchie Distillery for a tour and a tasting (and perhaps a bottle for a fireside drink later in the evening). In the other direction, a half-hour walk gets you to Winton House for walking trails through the grounds. Fancy a round of golf? You’ll have plenty of choice, as there are about 15 courses in the surrounding area. For other ways to get out into the fresh air, get out to one of the nearby beaches – Gullane, Yellowcraig and North Berwick are all within a half-hour drive. You could easily combine one of these with a stop to see the excellent plane collection at the National Museum of Flight (20 minutes’ drive). A day out in Edinburgh should certainly be on the schedule too – it’s easy to get there by bus from the site to climb up to the castle, tour the Royal Botanic Garden and visit the various museums.
