  • Well-maintained caravan site on the shores of Loch Alsh
  • Isle of Skye 10 minutes’ drive; an hour to Loch Ness
  • Railway station, supermarkets and pubs within five minutes' drive
Tick off sights along the North Coast 500, sail (or drive) over the sea to Skye and experience some of the very best scenery in the Highlands at Reraig Caravan and Camping, a well-maintained and thoroughly peaceful location on the shores of lovely Loch Alsh. Set on over two acres of tree-lined grounds within easy walking distance of the water's edge, this is a great spot for overnight stops or longer holidays in a very special part of Scotland. With spacious pitches served by well-maintained amenities – including a smart toilet and shower block, washing-up areas and chemical waste disposal points – you're in good hands here from a practical point of view. And when it comes to food, there's a restaurant and bar next door to the site to fill you up when you're feeling hungry; supermarkets, pubs and restaurants can also be reached in Kyle of Lochalsh within a five-minute drive, so you won't be short on off-site or self-catering options either. Balmacara’s village convenience store is also just opposite the site on the A87. Dogs are welcome at Reraig Caravan and Camping, but please make sure to keep them on their leads and well-behaved at all times.

Electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: This was a nicely put together small site and the pitches were laid out well with plenty of space. We were situated against the back of the site where it backs on to a wooded area and over looks the rest of the site. There is a useful food van than provides food which is great if you're a late arrival to site. Lovely toilets/showers and all amenities for the our camper/caravan.

Disliked: Midges! Whilst I know there is nothing the site can do about them and this comment is not at all aimed at the site it's more of a means to highlighting the problem, just be aware that from dusk to dawn or at least until the sun comes out the following day there is an abundance of them and you'll need either the best nets on your chosen camping home or you'll need to keep the doors/windows closed. We have dogs and this was hard for us to have to keep them in the campervan and try and cook with the doors and windows closed. We had the door open just a short time and they were everywhere.

I know western Scotland near to lochs has the biggest midge population so it is to be expected but one of our dogs had them over her head, neck and legs which wasn't great and neither did I expect that. We have travelled down the whole west coast from the north and these are the only midges we have encountered.

So if this isn't something you like I'd consider this before you book. (We visited in may)

Electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Briliant location for travelling around the Isle of Skye in particular. Spotlessly clean, nice food van on site for some days. Lovely view.

Disliked: Pub/hotel for food next door is NOT dog friendly.
Neighbouring pitch put up their driveaway awning on our grass pitch when we were out for the day (parked sideways instead of on their own section) and nobody (wardens) said anything.
Nothing really in walking distance if you have a dog and want a meal out.
WiFi hit and miss, dropped out a lot.

Electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Friendly, helpful wardens who really seemed to take care for the site! Facilities are a little dated but very clean. On site take-away and a well stocked, reasonably priced shop just outside the campsite. Handy location for cycling to Isle of Skye (we took the longer, hillier but safer back road).

Disliked: Some road noise during the day but no problem in the evening.

Local attractions

Locally, there's lots to see and do, from the National Trust for Scotland's network of Loch Alsh woodland and lochside walks (a couple of minutes' drive) to the spectacular grounds of Attadale Gardens (20 minutes) or the impressive sight of Eilean Donan Castle (five minutes), one of the most iconic fortresses on Scotland's west coast. Driving over to the Isle of Skye can be done in about 10 minutes, but it will take about an hour to get to the island's biggest town of Portree, and a little longer still to get to more remote spots. The drive is well worth the effort, though – and if you need respite from being behind the wheel, you can head out birdwatching or in search of whales and dolphins aboard one of the many tourist cruises that leave from the island's main harbours. Further afield, day trips into the interior are also on the cards – you'll be able to reach Loch Ness in about an hour without too much trouble, and if monster-hunting doesn't appeal you could always go cycling along the Caledonian Canal (an hour) or hiking along the Five Sisters of Kintail (30 minutes), a spectacular ridge walk high up in the mountains.
