  • Castle Kennedy Gardens 25 minutes’ drive and Agnew Park 15 minutes
  • Spectacular Irish Sea and Dunskey Castle views from clifftop pitches
When it comes to cliff-top locations, Castle Bay Holiday and Residential Park has got it well-and-truly sorted. Less than 20 minutes’ walk along the coastal path from the postcard-pretty village of Portpatrick in Dumfries and Galloway, the hardstanding pitches here have spectacular views over Dunskey Castle and the Irish Sea at Castle Bay. This peaceful, family-run and family-friendly holiday park has well-maintained facilities to keep you all comfortable, and it makes a smashing base for exploring the scenic coastline and surrounding countryside on foot, bike or by car. The owners are also on hand to give you the inside info on local shops, restaurants and pubs. Access to the site is via a secured gate, so you and yours will always be safe and secure at Castle Bay. All you need to do is relax, enjoy those sea views and perhaps have a gentle wander down to a harbour-side pub in Portpatrick.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked fantastic views
great location

Disliked Service block a long way from touring pitches
Elsan point even further away and disgusting - worst I have come across
On leaving, the exit road was blocked by a large crane lifting a static caravan into position, no notice given and we had a long drive ahead of us. Had to wait almost 2 hours to get out.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Decent shower and toilet facilities, friendly site manager, great coastal walks, close proximity to portpatrick. Wonderful views

Disliked Hard standing pitches require large levelling blocks. Shower block closer to mobile homes than campervan/motorhome and camping pitches. Elsan point not close to pitches and require updating urgently. We were advised that this is “on the list of developments”
Large mobile home was moved to site on morning of our departure blocking only exit road for all vans that were leaving site. No warning was given and if we all had known that this was happening many of us would have left the site before this work started. Not a problem for us but if we had been catching a ferry that morning we would definitely have missed it !!

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The view.

Disliked 1. The slope of the touring pitches was excessive. Even with large ramps we were still far from level.
2. A bit disconcerting that should a campervan roll away, there is absolutely nothing to prevent rolling over a cliff. Perhaps some large rocks at the edge would ease the mind.
3. Tourers are placed at the furthest point from the entrance, which means the toilet block was about 200m away. The chemical toilet disposal point was even further away.
4. On our departure day (after a 3 night stay) we discovered at about 9.30am that a very large crane had been brought in to move a static caravan in to position, blocking the only exit road. The road was eventually opened after 11am. Just as well we weren't going for a ferry!
When I asked at reception why I, and 5 other guests, hadn't been informed that this was going to happen, I was accused of 'shouting at a woman'. I was told that 'staff tried telling everyone yesterday'. But no-one seemed to get the message. I was then told that the crane had only been organised the day before. That's some service from the crane operator! I was then told to leave the reception area and the receptionist locked the door and appeared to phone someone. 2 minutes later, a rather irate man arrived on a quad bike and asked why I was shouting at his wife. I'll stress now that I am not a shouty person! This rather aggressive man, the site manager, told me it was obvious that they were moving a caravan. Without the opportunity to explain my point about communication of the road closure, he dismissed any attempt by me to explain my point, he told me to F off his park, a few times actually, finally telling me to never come back. No problem complying with that request!

Local attractions

Take a stroll through the lush waterside plantings at Logan Botanic Garden (half an hour’s drive), where – thanks to the warming presence of the Gulf Stream – palms and eucalyptus trees thrive, while loch-side walks at Castle Kennedy Gardens (25 minutes) lead to the photogenic ruins of a castle and swathes of colourful rhododendrons (the latter in spring). When the kids need a relaxing run around in the fresh Scottish air, take them to Agnew Park (15 minutes) for go-karting, boating and expeditions aboard a mini train. There are walking and cycling trails for all abilities in Galloway Forest Park (45 minutes), where you could also surprise youngsters with feeding the goats at the Wild Goat Park (50 minutes). There are golf courses and fishing lakes within half an hour’s drive, and if you hit an odd rainy day (this being south-west Scotland), pay a visit to the fighter jets in their hangars at Stoneykirk Aviation Museum (15 minutes).
