  • Small, dog-friendly site in the Southern Uplands of Scotland
  • Access to the nine-mile Meikledale walk; a 45-minute drive to Carlisle
  • River on site for paddling; 10 minutes’ drive from a pub
Longing to stow yourself away in Scotland’s Southern Uplands for a while? You’ll have plenty of time for walking, recharging and other simple pleasures at Bush of Ewes. This dog-friendly site is set in a walkers’ haven, right at the start of the nine-mile Meikledale walk. Other hiking areas in the vicinity include the prehistoric trail at Loch Hill (five minutes’ drive) and the Langholm Hills (10 minutes). Rise and shine, fry an egg over the firepit and then take yourself for a little paddle in the river to really wake yourself up. Birds and other wildlife are frequent visitors at this peaceful site, so keep an eye out as you go along. Facilities on site include toilets and a shower. You might want to track down a Scottish castle or make your way to Carlisle (45 minutes) for a spot of sightseeing. The Lake District National Park is around an hour’s drive away too, if you fancy a day out by the lakes. The site sits on the A7, so getting about will be easy, and you won’t necessarily have to rely on your car, either, since there’s a bus stop right outside. The 95 bus goes to Langholm village (10 minutes), where there’s a small shop, a fishing lake and a pub/restaurant. Further out, Hawick (25 minutes) has a golf course, leisure centre, shops and local museum, while Canonbie (20 minutes) has a cinema and pretty stretch along the River Esk.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked A Hidden Gem – So Glad We Found It!
We discovered this campsite very last minute, and what an amazing surprise it turned out to be. Tucked away in a beautiful spot, it’s a peaceful, well-kept site that’s both family- and pet-friendly. Especially at just £15 a night, which felt like an absolute bargain for such a lovely spot.

The owners were incredibly welcoming, and the atmosphere felt relaxed and friendly from the moment we arrived. Plots are generously sized, offering plenty of space, and while the facilities are fairly simple, they were spotless. (An extra toilet would be a welcome addition, especially during busier times in the evening.)

The views are stunning in every direction, and the presence of friendly animals, sheep, goats, and chickens was a real highlight for the kids (and us!).

It was also lovely to see children playing safely around the campsite, especially in the grassed area that runs through the middle, such a nice feature that added to the relaxed, community feel.

But the absolute standout for us was the river access, perfect for paddling, cooling off, or just relaxing by the water. The children loved it, and so did the dog! There’s also a small play area and a great space for dogs to run freely.

To top it all off, fresh eggs were available on-site and absolutely delicious.

wouldn’t stay there again, better site down the road “Ewes campsite”

Liked Pitch

Disliked Facilities
How animals were kept. Dog locked in small wooden enclosure running round in circles!
Sheep tails not short, covered in their own excrement - could get fly strike

From the manager: Sorry you feel our animals are not looked after, but jack is a working collie dog he is in a kennel and run which is more than big enough for him, If you knew him you would know he has always run round in circles he does it even after a hard day's work it's just something he does, and as for the sheep all the pedigree ryelands have their tails docked to breed regulations which is just long enough to cover their private area, the valais and herdwicks do not have their tails docked as a breed, none of them are covered in there own excrement as you say as they are checked daily more than once which is why they are so friendly, and they have all been treated numerous times with click plus, please before leaving hurtful reviews regarding our very well loved looked after animals do some research.

Lovely peaceful site with clean facilities and access to walks.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We loved that we could walk through the sheep field as our daughter is a huge fan of animals. She really enjoyed looking at all the animals. We also liked how close we were to Langholm and lots of walking trails.
The toilets and showers were clean and the water was hot.

From the manager: Thank you for your review glad you enjoyed your stay Hope to see you again

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked The owner's was nice and was nice where you can by fresh egg from them and bye fierwood from them aswell. Nice little place to stay.

Disliked The road was busy at sorting time of the day so it could be bit noise at time.

From the manager: Thank you for your review, sorry to see you would not stay with us again, but all the electric cable is now in up the camping field, we are hoping to have all this connected up by the electrician in the next couple of weeks so this will move all the electric pitches away from the road.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Spacious pitch with a great view. Good possibilities for a walk. Lovely town of Longholm close by. Easy reachable with a tow caravan. All the farm animals, especially the free roaming chickens

Disliked Primitive toiletblock with only two (unisex) toilets and one (unisex) shower for the whole of the campsite. Which was not dufficient for a busy weekend as it was when we stayed there.
Very close to a main road, the A7, which has yraffic day and night.

From the manager: Thank you for your review im sorry to read you did not enjoy your stay, all the electric pitches are moving onto the camping field once the electric cable arrives which will move the pitches away from the road. All our adverts state the toilets and shower are unisex and we only have 1 shower and 2 toilets. This is hopefully going to be extended in the future

Local attractions

The city of Carlisle (45 minutes’ drive) has a well-preserved castle that must have seen some serious action during its centuries-old life in this border city. Other attractions include a stretch of Hadrian’s Wall and a medieval cathedral. After all that sightseeing, take a rest in one of several green areas along the River Eden. For outdoor activities such as watersports, cycling and horseriding, you can make a beeline for Kielder Water and Forest Park (50 minutes). There are also wooded walks, plus stargazing events organised by Kielder Observatory and birdwatching (ospreys nest here). At the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (about an hour), you can admire the mudflats in the Inner Solway Firth, stretch out on the sand dunes at Mawbray Banks or check out the boggy pools at Drumburgh Moss, which are visited by curlews, geese and skylarks, depending on the time of year.
