  • Berwickshire caravan park in the grounds of 18th-century Paxton House
  • A 10-minute drive to Berwick-upon-Tweed beaches, ruins and boat trips
  • Woodland walks, adventure playground, Tweed river trips from the site
Want to see how the other half lives? Pack a bag and park yourself in the walled garden at Paxton House Caravan Park. This Berwickshire pile was built in the Palladian style in 1763 for a nobleman who planned to live in it, then inherited a castle and moved there instead. Staying in this small park on the 80 acres of grounds, visitors can take in this popular landmark at their leisure, with river walks and boat trips down the Tweed and/or by delving into the history of the house and its collections of art and furniture. The kids can let off steam on the adventure playground and follow woodland trails to discover wildlife and maybe encounter a fairy or two. For practical things like pubs and grub and shops, as well as sandy beaches, estuary walks, ruins, sea safaris and fishing trips, Berwick-upon-Tweed is a brilliantly convenient 10 minutes' drive away.

Guests praise the tranquility, abundant walks, and convenient location near Berwick. While many facilities are excellent, some reviewers note the toilet and shower block is limited, particularly when busy. Liked What a wonderful site extremely well looked after I was aware of some of the electric hook up not working but once I left a message it was as simple as a fuse blown I was advised no toilet facilities so you need your own But 2 lovely very big toilet wet rooms porter cabins set up for disabilities with showers ln

Disliked My fault I didn’t read that you needed to prebook the house tour so we left it until the day and the tour was full so definitely prebook as we will be back

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Clean, tidy site with spacious pitches. Lovely walks around the gardens and woodland. Toilets spotless and showers nice and warm. Great little site to use as an overnight stopover travelling into Scotland although we stayed 3 nights on this visit. Buses run from the house into Berwick which is really handy.

Disliked Nothing to dislike.
We did notice a lot of campervans pulling in, just to use all the facilities.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Lovely tranquil setting in the walled garden. Each space is generously laid out and conveniently located for electric. Fantastic woodland and riverside walk for the dogs!

Disliked Nothing to dislike. Really liked the low key relaxed atmosphere. Advertised as having no bathroom facilities - they do exist but I guess it’s insufficient for the potential number of guests.

Well kept grounds
Good spaced pitches

Disliked No obvious process to follow on check on. 2 people told us just to find a pitch and set up. A sign would be useful.
2 toilets with showers. If you are to have facilities they need to cater for the size of site. Toilet blocked and shower floor on the verge of breaking.

From the manager: Many thanks for your review- we are glad you enjoyed your stay.

On the instructions to book, we ask that all caravan park visitors check in at the shop (between 10am-4pm). This is also signposted on the signage on the drive and above the shop.

We actually had the toilets installed for people who needed accessible facilities but decided to open them to the whole site rather than needing people to request a key. We understand that two wet rooms are not enough for 30 pitches and this is why we actively do not advertise the site as having toilets/ showers at all. All vans that stay should be self sufficient.

We were notified yesterday that there was an issue with one of the toilets and it was repaired immediately.

Many thanks for visiting- we hope to welcome you back soon.

Local attractions

History is never far away in these parts, and the glimpses you’ll get of Lindisfarne half an hour's drive away will doubtless lure you out during your stay. Wild and peaceful, the ruins of the priory and the castle point to the long and turbulent human past of the place while the colonies of puffins and waders carry on regardless. Check tide times if heading out by car; boat trips to and round make a leisurely way to visit with seal and puffin spotting possibilities en route. There are many more castles to peruse, if that’s your penchant: Bamburgh, still occupied but open to visitors, is half an hour’s drive away. Despite being 700 years old, Alnwick (45 minutes) is also still home to the descendants of its original owners and a must-see for JK Rowling fans as the film location for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The little villages of Beadnell and Seahouses (45 minutes away) form the gateway to the Northumbria Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a sea-hugging zone stuffed with chances to go rockpooling and paddleboarding, plus coastal paths and bike trails as well as a haven for wildflowers and (yes, really) wild cattle. Half an hour’s drive gets you to the edge of Northumbria National Park, packed with Roman remains, climbing in the Cheviot Hills and paths around Kielder Water. Further afield, the museums, culture, lively pubs and (of course) the castle of Edinburgh are very doable for a day trip, an hour and 20 minutes away.
