  • Well-equipped static caravans a 10-minute drive from Arbroath
  • Seaton Cliffs Nature Reserve five minutes’ drive; Dundee 40 minutes
  • Dog-friendly accommodations; restaurant; evening entertainment
If you’re planning a wee Scottish adventure – complete with wind-swept coastal walks, historic sights and maybe a little football excitement, too – head to Seaton Estate Holiday Village. This static-caravan park on the outskirts of Arbroath (10 minutes’ drive), on the North Sea coast, puts you within easy reach of all that. Remarkably peaceful, the site is surrounded by agricultural land, and there are plenty of walking routes to explore with your canine companion at your heel, starting with the Angus Coastal Path and the Seaton Cliffs Nature Reserve (both five minutes). At Seaton Cliffs, you will have to keep your dog on a leash, so as not to disturb the resident seabird colonies (including puffins) nesting on the sandstone cliffs. Lunan Bay Beach (15 minutes), a vast expanse of sand backed by grass-covered dunes, is also dog-friendly. The caravans come with fully equipped kitchens and comfortable dining areas – which should make keen cooks happy. (By the way, the nearest supermarket is about five minutes’ drive away.) If you fancy a night off from cooking duties, the on-site restaurant serves a range of classics, such as fish and chips, burgers and – just so you don’t forget you’re in Scotland – mince and tatties. After dinner, you might want to adjourn to the bar for a nightcap, or check out the evening entertainment, which might include live music or a comedy set. If you’re here on match day, Arbroath Football Club, aka the Red Lichties, play at Gayfield Park (10 minutes).

Local attractions

The town of Arbroath is home to the remains of a 12th-century abbey founded by King William the Lion and famed as the place where the Declaration of Arbroath was signed in 1320. Head to the fishing port to check out the Signal Tower Museum, in the lighthouse, and to sample the local speciality: Arbroath smokie, or smoked haddock. Said to have been the inspiration for Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’, Glamis Castle (40 minutes’ drive) was also the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. The current building, which dates from the 1400s, can be visited as part of a guided tour, but you can explore the gardens under your own steam. In Dundee (40 minutes), a distinctive contemporary structure on the River Tay houses the V&A Dundee, with changing exhibitions of design and art. The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum, which occupies a Gothic Revival building, displays locally significant artefacts.
