  • Adults-only shepherd’s huts in four acres of woods in Royal Deeside
  • In the Cairngorms National Park; 20 minutes’ drive to Balmoral Castle
  • Luxury site backing Dinnet Wood and bordering the River Dee
Now here’s a place that’s fit for royalty… Firbank Park is in gorgeous Royal Deeside, where monarchs have sought rural peace and quiet for generations. The adults-only accommodation at this Aberdeenshire park is a little different in style from that of nearby Balmoral Castle, 20 minutes’ drive away, but the luxury shepherd’s huts make a very fine place to stay indeed. Sleeping two people each, they are placed among four acres of mature Douglas fir, Scots pine and oak trees. Each shepherd’s hut has its own kitchen and a bathroom with a toilet and a shower. Outside, spend your downtime on the decking area, where there’s a hot tub, a gas barbecue and a covered ‘sitooterie’ where you can prop your feet up. This is a fabulous place for getting out to explore the splendid Scottish countryside – it’s just on the eastern edge of the Cairngorms National Park, with easy access to all sorts of walks, bike trails and munros to climb. The River Dee is a couple of minutes’ walk away for fishing, and there’s horse riding 10 minutes’ drive away at the Glen Tanar Estate. Alternatively, you could simply stick around on site and soak up the situation – Dinnet Wood, one of the oldest oak woods in Scotland, runs behind the site and you may well spot wildlife such as red squirrels, badgers, roe deer and buzzards passing by. Barbecues are welcome on site, and you should be able to pick up supplies at the shops in the villages of Aboyne or Ballater, both of which are about 10 minutes’ drive away – and which also have restaurants, cafés and takeaways for those times when you’d rather someone else did the cooking.

I just want to clarify that we do not have any Wifi as we are very rural here and there is no broadband in the area via BT landline. There is however a good 4G signal which is what we use on our phones.

Local attractions

Ballater (10 minutes’ drive) is a place where you’re bound to stop sooner or later – you’ll most likely be purchasing from shops that proudly display their Royal Warrant, but it’s also worth leaving a bit of time to visit the Old Royal Station, climb Craigendarroch Hill and play a round at Ballater Golf Club. Balmoral Castle (20 minutes) was famously the favourite residence of Queen Elizabeth II, and you’ll be able to find out why when you pay a visit – either taking a guided tour of the house or strolling around the grounds depending on the season. Heading out into the Cairngorms National Park is a must too, whether you’re planning adventures like a climb of nearby Ben Macdui or more gentle strolls looking out for Highland cows. Either way, you can finish off your day of activity with a few sips of something from Royal Lochnagar Distillery (25 minutes).
