  • Quiet, dog-friendly site on Scotland’s Castle Trail
  • Half an hour’s drive from Aberdeen and Craigievar Castle
  • Barbecues permitted on site and a shop five minutes’ drive away
Seeking a break in Scotland where you’ll be well-based for exploring castles, malt whisky distilleries and Aberdeen’s Old Town, harbour and mile-long sandy stretch? Hillhead Caravan Park has it down: a well-maintained, quiet site that’s just 15 miles from Aberdeen, around 55 minutes’ drive from the Malt Whisky Trail and right on the route of Scotland’s Castle Trail too. Where exactly is this Aberdeenshire site? Hillhead Caravan Park is in the Gordon District and bang in the middle of Scotland’s so-called ‘castle country’. It's just one mile west of the A96, the road that goes between Aberdeen and Inverness. That means that it’ll take you half an hour to get to Aberdeen by car whenever you fancy poking around the city’s museums, galleries, seafront and harbour. If you haven’t already filled up on goulash or other varied eats in Aberdeen, the site will permit you to start your own barbecue. The closest shop is just five minutes’ drive away when you’re looking to source all your important ingredients and anything you need for a picnic… There are many trails where you might want to take your picnic with you, beginning with the Castle Trail stopping at Craigievar Castle (half an hour's drive) or the working and historic distilleries around the Malt Whisky Trail (around 55 minutes’ drive). The latter heads into the Grampian Highlands, a mountain range with spectacular options for hikes, climbs, skiing and the sorts. Back on site, the facilities include a modern toilet and shower block.

Liked: The camp was quiet, nothing special as that is what we like. We were welcomed by Carol, who is a resident there. We had to ring her to check us in, no problem with that.
The toilet block was tired and in need of refreshing. Having said that, they were kept immaculate by Belle.
Recommended if you’re looking for a central place to stay in the ‘Castle belt’

Disliked: The WiFi was non existent. So you have to rely on 4 or 5 G
6 amp electricity means you have to juggle what you use otherwise it constantly trips.

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: Nobody there to greet us just a phone number and told a sheet on the notice board for us. Ladies toilets had a padlock on them so couldn’t use them. Men’s toilets/showes were unkempt and definitely not clean and in need of some repairs. Chemical toilet area was filthy and no clear instructions where to empty waste water.

From the manager: we would just like to appologise that there was no one to greet you however our secretary passed suddenly and we are still coming to terms with this and trying to go through everything that she dealt with,

the toilet block is going to be updated in the new year.

Unclean, unseated toilet block with no hot water.

Liked: Great location for a day trip to Bennachie.

Disliked: A previous camper had left an unpleasant residue on the toilet which was still there 2 days later.
There was lots of long hair in the shower and no hot water. I stayed for 3 nights and as it was quite chilly, it was disappointing not to be able to have a warm shower. The toilet block was locked on my last morning, so I could not use it at all.
I know it is the quiet season but there was no price concession, so I would have expected to be able to use the full amenities.
I will be recommending my walk to friends but not the campsite.

Liked: Quiet clean site. Useful book and dvd library.

Disliked: Toilet shower block in desperate need of upgrading with some shower trays laying full of water. On checking previoys reviews similar complaints have been recorded for years. Toilet/shower block has no operational space heating either.

Liked: The park is in a nice area on the edge of the town and has a road running by one side of the area. It’s reasonably flat with EHU close by.

Disliked: The toilet block is a short walk from the pitches and also contains the laundry, dish washing area and chemical toilet disposal.
The gents toilets contains a large disabled toilet and disabled shower. There is one small shower and toilet for the abled body and three sinks. The gents is in desperate need of renovation. The shower for the disabled was very dirty with no drain cover fitted. The short curtain was also very dirty. The showered overflowed when in use due to very poor drainage.
The grey waste disposal is a joke as it is so close to the toilet block you can’t get near it in your van, I had to use a bucket to empty my van. I was lucky I spent only one night on site so had little water to dispose of.

Local attractions

Those of you who rate cycling, walking and mountain biking highly might want to head to the landscapes around Aboyne (40 minutes’ drive). In the same direction, visit Balmoral Castle (an hour), the Queen’s Scottish residence. A trip to these two parts will take you through both Donside and Deeside. Keeping with the historical theme, Haddo House (35 minutes) frequently hosts theatrical productions from Prince Edward. However, if it’s castles you’re intent on finding first, perhaps a stroll around Castle Fraser (10 minutes), Drum Castle (25 minutes) or Corse Castle (half an hour)? In Aberdeen, there’s excitement in a few different forms. Historical places include The Gordon Highlanders Museum (25 minutes), the Girdle Ness Lighthouse (40 minutes) and Blairs Museum (25 minutes), while entertainment comes in the form of the Jump In Adventure Parks: Aberdeen (35 minutes) and the seafront amusements.
