Our beautiful site

  • Family-friendly farm site a 10-minute drive from Westbury, Wiltshire
  • Bratton White Horse five minutes’ drive; Bath 40 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; cycle hire; about a half-hour walk from the village pub
Set within the Salisbury Plain escarpment in rural Wiltshire and on the edge of the Bratton Downs, Country View Camping is an established retreat. Surrounded by stunning scenery, walks and medieval history sites, this is a place for people passionate about the outdoors. As well as being family-friendly, the site welcomes well-behaved dogs. The field is dotted with round hay bales (in season, natch) and overlooked by gentle slopes known for the Bratton White Horse, a gigantic silhouette of a horse carved into the chalky hill and visible for miles around. It takes about five minutes’ drive to reach this local landmark, or a 40-minute walk. It’s also possible to hire a bike on site and get there on two wheels in about 10 minutes. Keen hikers will have a vast choice of potential destinations here – from Clanger Wood (five minutes), a Site of Special Scientific Interest thanks to its populations of butterflies, moths and nightingales; to the paths along the River Avon (like the Millennium Riverside walk, 15 minutes). Not forgetting that you’re also between two areas of outstanding natural beauty here: Cranborne Chase (20 minutes) and North Wessex Downs (35 minutes). Barbecues are provided, but if you’d rather not bother with cooking, there are a handful of pubs in the area serving traditional food, including one in Bratton (five minutes, or a 25-minute walk). The farm is also a 10-minute drive from the market town of Westbury where there are further dining venues. The site has a toilet block and showers, plus charging facilities and recycling points.

Bell tent

Liked: Absolutely everything! We couldn't have asked for more. From the amazing welcome from Patrick, who couldn't do enough to make sure we had everything we needed, to the beautiful setting, views and spacious well equipped bell tents. Our kids, 7 and 8, loved the play area and the bouncy castles, and the free pool table was an added bonus! The site was incredibly safe and the kids could roam independently, while we enjoyed the setting. It was a great location to explore the local area, with lovely local pubs, take aways, and the bar on site serving food and drinks was an added bonus. Patrick has listened to feedback from previous reviews - there are now trolleys and the coffee is fab! A perfect Easter holiday break. We'll definitely be back!

Disliked: Absolutely nothing!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Welcome was great - very friendly and easy going. Bar on-site was great if you want to socialise. The facilities are good, with ample washing up and spacious toilets / showers. There is a comprehensive kids play area with a slide and outdoor seating, and the bell tents look pretty good for the glampers. Good level car parking area, and the location is good, with views of the nearby hill. Not quite a view of the white horse, but it's a really nice spot.

Disliked: For a camper with my own tent, the field felt like it had been grazing pasture with quite deep ruts and undulations in it and the grass was long and tufty. It's also overlooked by adjacent partially built properties which I didn't want to be too close to. The feel of the place was a bit like a partly finished project, rather than a place that is completed and ready for visitors.

The toilets and bar are covered by 2 ring doorbell cameras which announce to everyone 'Hi, you are being recorded' every time someone walks to the toilet, which got a bit annoying, particularly in the middle of the night.

From the manager: good afternoon
thank you so much for your feedback we must apologize for the security camera notification we had an issue with those which has now been rectified,
in reference to the grass we have now been able to get out there and cut it,
in terms of the partially built properties this is in fact construction of a new swimming pool that should be finished within the next couple of weeks and the building that you refer to are holiday lodges for guests again thank you so much for your feed back we are a new campsite and are always striving to improve our campers experience

many thanks
Patrick

Bell tent

Liked: Great spot, good facilities and handy cafe / bar on site. Also excellent activities for children (not needed by us but good to see). We stayed in a bell tent; it is roomy and the bed is very comfy. A real treat. Good location to visit Avebury, the white horse, Frome etc.

Bell tent

Liked: A hidden gem. The owners and staff put so much effort in and made us feel welcome and ensure we had a nice time. In particular, the site is very family friendly with children at the heart of the place.

We arrived late on Friday due to traffic and it was pouring. The site had a private function on, however we were delighted that we were able to have food and they delivered it to our bell tent so we could get settled and cosy. The solar lights literally light up the place and it looks like a fairy land.

The following day, weather was much better. Which meant we could enjoy the site. The children’s park is perfectly positioned so adults can enjoy a drink, knowing they can see their children playing. The site has an inflatable too which the children love. Staff filled a bubble tray for children to play with. Entertainment in the bar is reactive with what guests want, which included England game in the day and kids karaoke and games in the evening. There’s outdoor seating too if karaoke isn’t appealing. We also had a fire pit set up for us to do marshmallows once it was dark.

Nothing is too much ask and the site creates such a lovely camping experience. Bell tent was spotless and a fantastic size.

Disliked: As other comments have mentioned, the only part I would change is the coffee!

Bell tent

Liked: Everything. The site is set in a beautiful, peaceful location, which is handily placed for the white horse and the Imber Range circuit. The owners are very welcoming and are extremely attentive to customers needs. The bell tents are comfy, cosy and spacious. The bar/restaurant is a major bonus. If you do nothing else then you have to try the breakfast, it'll fill you up for the whole day! And try a pint of the inch's cider.....just superb.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The owners were nice and the lawn was freshly mowed, but that was about it.

Disliked: Unfortunately, our short stay was not recommendable. On arrival we were presented with a note with rules, from 10pm there must be absolute silence in the tent otherwise you will be expelled from the campsite the same evening. However, the same rule does not apply to the owners! They partied with external guests until the early hours with extremely loud music from the café/pub, sleeping was out of the question.
In addition, the sanitary facilities were not cleaned during the three days we stayed, disgusting.
This campsite has nothing to do with real camping. Very disappointing. Never again.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Hosts were very welcoming and facilities were great.
A quiet site and beautiful scenery.
Plenty of space on the pitch, with a short distance to the car.

Disliked: Coffee was expensive for instant granules(£3.50).
Otherwise, there was nothing to fault!!

Local attractions

A bag of feed will allow you to get up close and personal with some of the more greedy residents at Fairfield Animal Centre (15 minutes’ drive). Here you can also take alpacas and goats for a walk around the grounds, or help the keepers groom and feed the donkeys. The large play area includes wooden climbing structures. Among the National Trust properties in the vicinity are Westwood Manor (20 minutes) and Prior Park Landscape Garden (35 minutes). The former dates from the late 15th century and is popular for its garden, with a lily pond and topiary hedges. The latter, in a valley near Bath, is a Georgian park dotted with follies such as the elegant Palladian Bridge. A terrace adorned with Victorian-era statues of ancient emperors overlooks the sunken Roman Baths in Bath (40 minutes). A museum displays artefacts unearthed on site, including a bronze head of the goddess Minerva and thousands of silver coins, part of the Beau Street Hoard.
