  • Dog-friendly Wiltshire retreat on a smallholding just off the A350
  • A 15-minute drive to the Kennet and Avon Canal; 35 minutes to Bath
  • A five-minute drive from pubs and takeaways; walking trails nearby
Towpath adventures, country walks, Roman baths and laidback pub crawls? If you’re liking the sound of all of the above, Littleton Retreat has the recipe. Located on a smallholding just off the A350 in Littleton, Semington, your Wiltshire wanderlust will be well treated here. Make your way to the Kennet and Avon Canal, 15 minutes’ drive away, for peaceful towpath bike rides and days of boating or take yourself off-piste onto various local walks. Melksham, the local town, is 45 minutes’ walk from the site if you fancy a takeaway. Or perhaps you might want to plot out your own route for a relaxed, daytime pub crawl (the first pub is a short drive or cycle away) in and around Melksham. Littleton Retreat is a well-maintained site with mainly level grassy pitches. It’s a simple sort of getaway – the type where guests can fully unwind without too many distractions (unless you count the towpath adventures and Bath’s many Roman sites and cobbled streets, 35 minutes’ drive away, that is). The facilities consist of drinking water, an Elsan point, portable toilets and waste disposal.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: Great little site, friendly staff, nice sized pitches, plenty of fresh water points, immaculately kept grounds, clean toilets. It’s worth clarifying that yes, you can hear the traffic, but it’s nowhere near as bad as some people have made out on here, we slept really well.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: Very well kept, friendly site with all the basics. Facilities were clean. Good sized pitch that was clearly marked out, with fencing & young plants that will eventually be hedges between the pitches. Overall very nice little site.

Disliked: Not a problem for me as I was the only lady on the site this time, but maybe more ladies toilets would be helpful, for busier times.

From the manager: Thanks for your lovely review, there will be an extra ladies toilet and showers coming soon, thanks ady.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: Small but spacious site with well demarked pitches and pretty level ground. Be prepared for a good old fashioned flannel wash as there are currently no showers yet, although they are being planned. There is an adequate toilet facility (not porta-loos) but a couple more ladies toilets would be beneficial. The site also has a recycling area, an ELSAN tank, grey water drain and a dishwashing shed.
The location can be a little less tranquil during the day to road noise (although this didn't bother us) but is quieter in the evenings. It is well placed for direct access via the lane to a large network of footpaths leading to and from Semington village and the canal tow path/cycleway. The dog was more than happy to help us explore this historic area.
Our host, Ady, was very kind & friendly and keeps the site clean & tidy. Thank you Ady!

Local attractions

What will Wiltshire serve you up? There’s medieval architecture, a brewery and a working set of Shire horses in Devizes (15 minutes’ drive) – that might make you feel like you’re back in the olden’ days. The same goes for Trowbridge (10 minutes), which is one of 23 Magna Carta towns (very important places 800 years back in time). Nowadays, it has a splendid weekly market and great shopping streets. Tick off a bucket list item while you’re making your way around, as the stone circle of Stonehenge (half an hour) isn’t too far away either. Avebury (half an hour) has another ancient stone circle, which is part of the Avebury World Heritage Site. If you’re not quite done with the historical itinerary, Bradford-on-Avon (15 minutes) on the river Avon has an ancient bridge, 19th-century cloth mills and old weavers’ cottages. There’s an Elizabethan manor house in Longleat (half an hour) too, but another big attraction there is the drive-in safari park where monkeys can clamber over your car and lions can stride past your vehicle.
