  • Kid-friendly site on a grass field a five-minute drive from Malmesbury
  • Fishing and golf within a 10-minute drive; Berkeley Castle 45 minutes
  • Barbecues provided; campfires and dogs allowed; play area
Occupying a well-maintained grass field a five-minute drive from the town of Malmesbury, in North Wilshire, Bamboo Field is a peaceful pop-up spot that’s particularly suitable for families. Grownups can relax as the children run around the secure site, which includes a play area. Well-behaved dogs are welcome here, though they must be kept under control at all times. However, there is also a park where you can let your canine buddy run free. Of course, after joining you on an exploration of the surrounding bridleways, your dog might well prefer to have a snooze by the campfire… In addition to country walks, there’s an 18-hole course at Brinkworth Golf Club, or you can angle for trout at the Great Somerford Lakes (both five minutes’ drive) and for carp at Ivy House Lakes (10 minutes). Meanwhile, world music aficionados might like to learn that the WOMAD Festival takes place at Charlton Park Estate (10 minutes) over four days in the summer. On site, barbecues are supplied, and you can source provisions at the Dauntsey Farm Shop (five minutes). If you can’t be bothered to light and look after the barbie, there are a couple of pubs serving traditional British food within walking distance, including one in Little Somerford (10 minutes’ walk) and another in Lea (a half-hour walk), plus lots more in Malmesbury. And if nobody in your party is volunteering to be the designated driver, you can reach Malmesbury by bus (the route runs along the B4042 road just by the entrance).

Local attractions

Why not indulge in a spot of forest bathing at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum (20 minutes’ drive)? Here you can admire thousands of trees (both from below and from a treetop walkway right up in the canopy), hunt for Gruffalo sculptures on a woodland trail or go looking for woodpeckers and other birds. If you long for the roar of a powerful engine rather than the quiet of nature, head to Castle Combe Circuit (25 minutes). In addition to watching races and checking out rally car shows, you can have a go at driving a rally car yourself – or be a passenger on a white-knuckle ride with an experienced driver. Built in the 12th century to repel attacks from the Welsh, Berkeley Castle (45 minutes) houses a collection of historic treasures, such as a bedspread that belonged to Queen Elizabeth I. Its 6,000-acre grounds include a deer park and a woodland play area, and there is also a lively programme of events.
