  • Small site on a quiet family-run farm 10 mins' drive from Malmesbury
  • On the edge of the Cotswolds, 45 minutes' drive from Bristol and Bath
  • Barbecues encouraged; firepits for hire; fresh lamb and beef for sale
Poke around the Cotswolds and wind down with a barbecue using produce fresh from the farm… peaceful and rural is the order of the day at Rouselands Farm Camping. At this site, you’ll be breezing into a site based on a family-run farm in Wiltshire, 10 minutes’ drive from Malmesbury and 25 minutes from Chippenham. This is a splendid place to come for a quiet break close to the Cotswolds – and there’s plenty of scope to get out for rural walks or bike rides on the local lanes, although you might mostly prefer to hang out on site and meet the animals or spend some time by the large fish pond. It’s quiet here, in a field adjacent to the farmhouse, but there’s still easy access from the road on a dedicated track. A short walk across the grass (100 metres or so) gets you to the shower block, which has two flushing toilets, washing-up facilities, laundry facilities for a small charge, and two hot, curtained showers. When you’re done exploring for the day, basking in a firepit is one way to unwind – they’re available to hire on site. Barbecues are also encouraged by the site. As this is a working farm, there’s no finer way to sort out dinner than to pick up the fresh lamb and beef produced on site – it’s available seasonally to cook or take home with you. Plus, plenty of other farms nearby sell fresh produce such as meat, eggs, milk and other bits – ask the site owners for tips on getting the best local grub.

The Old Hay Cart 1 bedroom shepherd's hut

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: Upon arrival, we were immediately met with unsanitary conditions. Dead flies and wasps were falling from the blinds, and a significant number of flies were entering the hut through the roof. These conditions were very unpleasant.
We promptly contacted the host to report the issue and although she advised she would visit the hut to assess the situation We felt the only option was spraying an enclosed sleeping area, which we would not of been able to sleep in with 2 children, this was also not going to address the ongoing infestation. We chose to leave & book other accommodation for our weekend away. Since leaving the property the hosts responses to our emails seeking a refund are somewhat unprofessional and we only received a £50 refund out of the £149 we paid to stay, being charged £99 to use the toilet in the shower block which was disgusting we wouldn’t of showered in there had stayed there & for the children to sit on the double bed whilst we tried to get rid of the dead flies & wasps & the alive flies that were suddenly appearing is rather steep. We fully understood we were staying on a working farm however we did not expect to be welcomed with what was in the shepherds hut & the response from the host was very unprofessional. The reviews currently listed on Pitch up are not for the shepherds hut they are for the touring camping field she also has on site, there are NO REVIEWS on the shepherds hut..! We definitely would NOT recommend staying here to anyone…!

From the manager: Many thanks for your review, I am sorry that you did not enjoy your visit to our farm.

We have 10 camping pitches (not touring) and only 1 Shepherds hut so the campsite pitches do gain more reviews overall, but the reviews for the hut are there, including a 10/10 review for the hut only 2 reviews below yours and another only a few below that. However I am sorry you were not able to see them.

You paid £140 for your stay, £21 of that was the non-refundable deposit that you paid to Pitchup. As per the Pitchup.com cancellation policy on your booking the payment is non refundable within 1 week of the arrival day. Also no refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.

The main issue for us and many in the hospitality industry is that you also chose to leave without giving us opportunity to rectify anything, despite me offering within 6 minutes of your contact, which I was willing to do. Had there been an issue I would have refunded you fully but when I went to the hut after you left there was 1 fly in the hut, none 'emerging' from the ceiling and on the subsequent days that I checked the hut there were no flies to be found.

Yes we do live on a farm and in the countryside and so unfortunately insects are a part of that. However, having checked the hut both before and after your visit I am confident that there was no ongoing issue.

We are a small farm and every booking is a vital income. Having said that, we go above and beyond to do everything we can to make sure our guests have a great stay. You have now also raised concerns that you did not raise when you were here, again giving me no opportunity to respond. We were unable to re let the hut for that time period at such short notice. You had also used the bedding and toilets and so cleaning costs were incurred. I also purchased and decorated the hut with balloons and a birthday banner at your request for no extra charge. With all this I still refunded you £50.00 as a goodwill gesture.

I am sorry that, despite this, you find my response unprofessional.

We are forever thankful for the wonderful visitors, guests and now friends that we have made since starting our campsite and Shepherds hut, many of whom return year on year and without whom we certainly wouldn't have kept going.

With all good wishes
Alison and Shaun

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: We were lucky enough to be the only ones on site for the night we stayed. Alison, the host was lovely and we were able to purchase some great farm steak for dinner. Toilet, shower and washing up facilities all good with the added bonus of being able to use a hairdryer. Only problem I could see would be limited facilities if the site was full and it is a little walk to facilities up a track from the camping field. Would definitely recommend at £15 for the night.

Local attractions

Since you’re so close to the Cotswolds here, mapping your way there might be one of the first things on your to-do list. And while it may be known for its characterful villages (Bibury, half an hour’s drive away, is one of these), there’s a beach too at Cotswold Water Park (20 minutes’ drive), making paddleboarding, canoeing and kayaking easy to access, or there are giraffes, lions and other big animals to see at Cotswold Wildlife Park (45 minutes). When you’re craving the buzz that comes with the busier towns or cities, that’s no problem either. Just outside the Cotswolds, Cirencester (25 minutes) is particularly scenic. That's if you're not too busy browsing the town’s museum or making a splash in the open-air pool. Further afield, Bath (45 minutes) and Bristol (45 minutes) have their own spoonfuls of historical sites, shops and museums. For those days where you prefer to stick close to your nest, a trip to 12th-century Malmesbury Abbey (10 minutes) might do. Or, there’s all the artistic flair of the Elemental Sculpture Park (20 minutes) to take in and Westonbirt Arboretum’s treetop walkway and Gruffalo trail (25 minutes).
