Dog walking field, with footpath into acres of mature woodland, leading to the river parrett

  • Adults-only site with a woodland above the Somerset Levels
  • Half an hour's drive from Glastonbury and 40 minutes from Wells
  • On-site pub with a sundeck overlooking 32 miles of countryside
Phew, what a view… adults-only Bowdens Crest Caravan and Camping Park overlooks the Somerset Levels and its moors, as well as the Quantock and Blackdown Hills, the river Parrett and the Vale of Taunton Dene, stretching out towards Brendon Hill and Exmoor. Over 30 miles of Somerset surroundings can be seen from here on a clear day, all the way to Minehead. The site covers nine and a half acres of natural woodland and elevated land, set on white lias stone with an eight-inch soil top (rock pegs are recommended for tents). There's an on-site pub, the Bowden's Bar, which has a scenic sundeck with views of the countryside; there are entertainment nights on occasions throughout the year. Plus, local street food trucks pay the site a visit on weekends, so grab some hot food to eat in the bar or take back to your pitch. On-site amenities include chemical disposal and a well-maintained toilet and shower block with separate ladies’ and gents’ sections, and an accessible shower room. Washing-up sinks with free hot water are also available. There is also an on-site fitness centre where you can keep fit while on holiday. The small town of Langport is about a mile and a half away. It's half an hour's drive from the site to Glastonbury or 40 minutes to Wells.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Very friendly and helpful people, both the warden and other residents. There seemed to be mainly permanent caravans with just a smaller area for tourers. The weather was against us but in the sunshine the views are lovely. All facilities were clean. Even had a bar. It was quiet when we were there probably because the rain kept people inside. The pitches aren't marked out and as it was fairly empty of tourers, we didn't feel penned in. Somerset very pretty and not too crowded location.

Disliked: Slight confusion where to get drinking water from. This wasn't explained. Also for us there wasn't much to do/see in the surrounding area. However, if the weather had been better we would have explored more. We were only there 3 nights over bank holiday. Don't know if there is WiFi, this wasn't told to us, but had our own anyway. One night a dog barked for hours on end unchecked. Think it was one of the permanent homes on site. We were inside so not too annoying. Felt more sorry for the dog!

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Stan the host was very welcoming and lovely.
The bar on site is a community run bar, we only went in for a couple but it was fun listening to all of the locals. They were all very friendly too.
The site is lovely and clean, as are the showers and toilets.

Disliked: Nothing, unfortunately we could only stay one night.

From the manager: Hi Rachael and Racheal we are so pleased that you enjoyed it here and please come back and soak up some more of this peaceful part of Somerset

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Had a very warm welcome from Stan on arrival who pointed out all the facilities. He led me to my pitch which was nice, spacious, and decently level for a grass pitch. I also had the gardener pop over to check I had hooked up to the electric point ok which was nice given it was dark and very cold by that point! I arrived fairly late and left early so didn’t get to explore all the facilities unfortunately. However I did pop into the loos which were spotlessly clean, with hot water, a hairdryer, and what looked like nice showers. I would imagine there’s a stunning view in daylight and if I’d stayed longer I definitely would’ve checked out the gym, bar and laundry room. If I’m in the area again I would return

Disliked: Nothing

Electric grass pitch

Liked: It was a lovely site. It was very secure. Beautiful views. Toilet block was clean and well looked after.

Disliked: It is listed as an adult only site. There were a few children. It didn't really bother us but maybe shouldn't be listed as adults only if it's not.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We are so glad you enjoyed your stay.
We are an adults only site regarding the touring side of the park but lodge owners and seasonal pitch holders are allowed to have their Grandchildren and other relatives visit them as long as they are constantly supervised and kept away from the touring fields.
It all seems to work out without any nuisance caused to tourers but it is something that is constantly monitored.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Nice location, lovely views over Somerset. Facilities ok good.

Disliked: Advertised on Pitchup as adults only, which it is not.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We do apologize for any lack of clarity. From a touring point of view it is adults only. Our clients who own lodges and season pitches for contractual reasons are allowed to have their grandchildren visit on the provision that they are fully supervised at all times, it seems some children were not under close supervision during your stay and the relevant parties have been spoken to.
Yet again we apologize and I will try to make things clearer on the sites listing

Local attractions

The best of Somerset is close to hand from Bowdens Crest, such as witch hunting at Wookey Hole Caves, striding around the Quantock Hills, Blackdown Hills and the Somerset Levels, exploring the subterranean sights of Cheddar Caves, or, for the more modern, happily spending holiday money at Clarks Village in nearby Street. Glastonbury is about 12 miles away; these days it’s probably better known for its famous fest nearby, but a more peaceful time can be had around Glastonbury Abbey, which has stood on this site since the seventh century and which may – just possibly – be King Arthur’s Avalon where the mighty Excalibur was forged (Arthur and Queen Guinevere are purportedly buried here.) The ‘holy hill’ of Glastonbury Tor, home to Gwyn ap Nudd or the King of the Fairies, is another legendary local highlight to trek to: Somerset picnics taste super at the base of St Michael’s Tower, accompanied by tasty views of the Somerset Levels, Wiltshire, Dorset and over to Wales. Tiny Wells, about 20 miles away, is well worth a visit too: once there, see the show caves at the Wookey Hole Caves on the edge of the Mendip Hills. Another seven or so miles north-west and on the south side of the Mendips, spectacular Cheddar is worth at least a day to see the most of Cheddar Gorge and Cheddar Caves, where you can stick to sightseeing or be a bit more adventurous caving or rock climbing. Outdoor options in the area include hiring a bike and pedalling off from Langport Visitor Centre into the Somerset countryside, fishing on the River Parrett and around Bridgwater, Somerton and Taunton, or sea fishing for Dover sole and bass from the beach at Burnham-on-Sea.
