Hardstanding and grass pitches
Hardstanding and grass pitches

  • Rural Somerset site crossed by a stream a five-minute drive from Frome
  • Longleat 10 minutes’ drive; Wookey Hole Caves 35 minutes
  • Play area with miniature adventure course; dog-friendly walks nearby
A gorgeously rural corner of Somerset is the setting for Seven Acres Camping Site, which stretches over (you guessed it…) seven acres on the edge of the Longleat Estate, a five-minute drive from the town of Frome. A stream runs through the site, which is just off the B3092; this makes it easy to access, but it also means you may hear some traffic noise. A railway line runs parallel to the road, too… but you might find that the jolly whistling of a passing train rather adds to the romance of camping. It’s all about perspective, isn’t it? Regardless, forget the possible noises and accentuate the positive, starting with oodles of space and a play area with play equipment and a miniature adventure course where the kids can climb, slide and swing to their hearts’ content (while you keep an eye on proceedings from the nearby shaded bench). There are no cars permitted in the camping field, keeping the atmosphere peaceful; after you park up, you'll need to unload and walk to your pitch. This is a self-check-in site, so settle in at your own pace. While you may not see them, the team is on-site daily to make sure everything is running smoothly. Your canine companion is not left behind either, with plenty of dog-friendly walks in the surrounding area. Have a go at the circular Mells Walk (10 minutes’ drive), following the course of the Mells River; or head to Clanger Wood (20 minutes’ drive), known for its bluebell meadows and colourful butterflies. Cranborne Chase National Landscape (35 minutes) has trails leading through its distinctive landscape of chalk river valleys and escarpments; this area is also an International Dark Skies Reserve, so be sure you have all you need to stay until after sundown for some spectacular stargazing.

This is a beautiful, clean, and well-maintained site set amongst mature trees with a lovely stream. Pitches are generally spacious and well-kept, with many offering a good balance of sun and shade. Facilities, including showers and toilets, are frequently described as new, clean, and immaculate. The park and playing field are great for children, with a popular climbing frame and the stream providing opportunities for paddling. The self-check-in process is noted as easy and fast. Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Being surround by beautiful trees was fantastic. Close to the shower/amenity block was very convenient

Disliked Allowing the fire pits made for a very uncomfortable stay, the smell was overwhelming and totally unnecessary on an already warm evening.
Due to location the road noise can be loud

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Quiet site with good facilities, and great for stargazing.

In a great location, close to Longleat with Frome and Warminster both easily accessible to get any essentials that may be needed during the stay (Frome has at least 2 supermarkets and a retail park with other shops such as The Range, Warminster has at least one supermarket and a lovely garden shop which sells firewood).

The climbing frame was very much enjoyed by my daughter, as was the stream (she decided to sit in it on the first evening, getting herself soaked 🤣). The gate to enter the site was different but made it very private, the camping field being car free was great.

The quiet times were followed so it was nice not being woken at first light by someone outside excited and wanting to play, and getting the kids settled was fairly easy too 🥰.

Disliked Never saw the site owners, if I did they never introduced themselves to me. Although we had our own trolley to transport stuff, some of the carts provided by the site have seen better days, practically fell apart when we did use them.

Local attractions

Budding zoologists might enjoy a day at Longleat (10 minutes’ drive), where you can drive through vast enclosures housing big cats, wolves and rhinos; get hopelessly lost in Britain’s largest hedge maze; and take a tour of the 16th-century stately home, with its splendid artworks and tapestries. Wookey Hole Caves (35 minutes), on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills National Landscape, features a subterranean network of limestone caverns and passages with evocative names like Witch’s Kitchen. After having a go at the caving experience, check out the lifesize creatures at Dinosaur Valley or unwind on the miniature golf course. Treat yourself to a visit to Bath (35 minutes). The Roman bath complex in the centre of town includes a sacred spring and a museum displaying ancient artefacts. Follow that with afternoon tea at the Regency Tea Room at the Jane Austen Centre, where you can pretend to be Emma or Mr Darcy.
