Bridge over the river frome into the camping field
Hardstanding and grass pitches
Hardstanding and grass pitches

  • Rural Somerset site crossed by a stream a five-minute drive from Frome
  • Longleat 10 minutes’ drive; Wookey Hole Caves 35 minutes
  • Play area with miniature adventure course; dog-friendly walks nearby
A gorgeously rural corner of Somerset is the setting for Seven Acres Camping Site, which stretches over (you guessed it…) seven acres on the edge of the Longleat Estate, a five-minute drive from the town of Frome. A stream runs through the site, which is just off the B3092; this makes it easy to access, but it also means you may hear some traffic noise. A railway line runs parallel to the road, too… but you might find that the jolly whistling of a passing train rather adds to the romance of camping. It’s all about perspective, isn’t it? Regardless, forget the possible noises and accentuate the positive, starting with oodles of space and a play area with play equipment and a miniature adventure course where the kids can climb, slide and swing to their hearts’ content (while you keep an eye on proceedings from the nearby shaded bench). There are no cars permitted in the camping field, keeping the atmosphere peaceful; after you park up, you'll need to unload and walk to your pitch. This is a self-check-in site, so settle in at your own pace. While you may not see them, the team is on-site daily to make sure everything is running smoothly. Your canine companion is not left behind either, with plenty of dog-friendly walks in the surrounding area. Have a go at the circular Mells Walk (10 minutes’ drive), following the course of the Mells River; or head to Clanger Wood (20 minutes’ drive), known for its bluebell meadows and colourful butterflies. Cranborne Chase National Landscape (35 minutes) has trails leading through its distinctive landscape of chalk river valleys and escarpments; this area is also an International Dark Skies Reserve, so be sure you have all you need to stay until after sundown for some spectacular stargazing.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Such a beautiful campsite, very clean and tidy. Easy to check in with the gate code and your pitch number emailed to you before hand. We did have an issue with someone setting up camp on our designated pitch but the owner sorted things out quickly.

Disliked A little busy for our liking but that’s our preference, No fault of the owner or campsite.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Clean and tidy site

Disliked Most of the showers had only glass doors so no privacy. No proper check in and no owners seemed to be very present so not clear how to get help if needed. Dogs are allowed on site but must be kept on leads, this isn’t the case there was a dog running around most of the time, around peoples pitches and no one to keep an eye on things. Pitches weren’t level and most of them it would be a struggle to erect and awning or tent on them. Road and train track quite loud.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Beautiful site, really quiet and loved the stream backing into our pitch.

Disliked Confused by the showers which just had a glass screen door. Only 3 women's toilets, which never had any toilet roll and only a communal towel to dry hands on. Would stay again if I brought swim wear to shower in.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Loved that the general camping area hasn’t got any cars and the wheelbarrows and trolleys were very useful!

Beautiful surrounds and felt very safe for the children to run around.

Really liked the play area and that campfires are allowed.

Disliked Not enough showers or toilets, and the toilets and showers needed to be cleaned/maintained better. You’d often find no toilet roll or flooded shower areas

We are told we must camp on our designated pitch but there aren’t any designated pitches in the general campsite which was confusing on arrival. This is also frustrating when we are told we must book a pitch per tent but there aren’t any pitches so could have just booked one pitch and saved £100+

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Quiet after 22h00
Managed to book late
Price not too steep

Disliked No vehicles allowed next to pitch and no reception area
Lots of smoke from other camper campfires/barbecues etc

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We’re so pleased you found the site quiet after 10pm and that booking was nice and straightforward.

We understand the car-free field and the lack of a reception area can feel a little different. We’ve designed the site this way to keep the camping field safe, peaceful, and more in touch with nature. Instead of a reception, we’re always just a phone call away if you need anything at all during your stay.

We also appreciate your comments about campfire smoke – it’s a popular part of the camping experience for many guests, but we’ll keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t spoil anyone’s visit.

Thank you again for your feedback, and we’d love to welcome you back in the future.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Communal fridges, extension lead, mixed sex toilet and shower room, separate men’s and females toilets, showers and sink facilities. Nice stream, provides endless entertainment for kids. Saw lots of children playing nicely and had a wooden swing set. Firepits but bring your own wood as expensive to buy on site. Pitch up anywhere. Spacious campsite with one shaded corner, rest of space mostly full sunshine.

Disliked Slightly busier on Saturday but was a bank holiday. Staff shortage so toilets not replenished with rolls and soap but the man was very helpful bringing us wood whilst also working at the clubhouse down the road.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your detailed feedback – we’re really happy to hear you enjoyed the facilities, the stream, and the family-friendly atmosphere on site. It’s always lovely to see the kids making the most of the space and the swing set, and we’re glad you found the site spacious and welcoming.

Over the bank holiday the toilet supplies were replenished but ran out much quicker than usual due to the site being so busy. We’re glad our onsite manager was able to help – we always respond quickly to any problems, even if we are short on staff. Thank you as well for your kind words, we’ll be sure to pass them on.

Bank holidays are always our busiest time, so we really appreciate your understanding. We’d love to welcome you back another time 😌

Wookey Hole Caves (35 minutes), on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills National Landscape, features a subterranean network of limestone caverns and passages with evocative names like Witch’s Kitchen.
