  • Small and friendly adults-only site near Cheddar Gorge in Somerset
  • A 10-minute drive to Wookey Hole Caves; 45 minutes to Bath
  • On a bus route to Cheddar and Wells; pubs and shops 10 minutes’ drive
If tiny sites and a peaceful kid-free vibe are the things that have you stoked on holiday, you'll like The Rodney Stoke Caravan and Camping Park, a small, flower-filled and friendly site with Mendip Hills views and near Cheddar in Somerset. On site, pitches are lined by neat hedgerows to up your privacy stakes and there’s room to park your cars too. A handy, contemporary bathroom block is out by the pitches too, and was upgraded for the 2020 season with toilets and showers. For cooking up a feast on site, barbecues and self-contained firepits are permitted, and you can stock up on goodies for the grill at the basics store in Draycott village (five minutes’ drive). The site is not far from Cheddar and the ancient city of Wells; if you fancy having a pint in a pub at either place, leave your car at base camp and take the bus running to both that leaves from the stop nearby. The Rodney Stoke site welcomes dogs as long as they're well-behaved, but no humans under 16, please.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Clean site, pitches clean and in good condition, hook up accessible close by. Very clean shower block and toilets, central location, very close to Wells, Cheddar, and Weston Super Mare, pub onsite was fantastic but I understand not owned by the campsite. Food was lovely! Staff were very friendly and very helpful, reasonably price food.

Disliked: Locked gate to get in the site was on its last legs, understand the site owners wanted to keep shower block clean, but no shoes! Far too many rules! This is an adult site. Although the shower block was clean, not enough cubicles or toilets, on entry a sign stated you had to take your shoes off to enter, which we thought was a bit strange really, Only one sink to wash up dishes, which was locked at 8.30PM prompt. No shop or basic stuff like milk, bread etc on site. We decided to visit a place on way up and didn’t arrive till mid afternoon, during which time was sent a rather curt email stating that if we didn’t arrive by 6pm we would not get in. We knew the last entry time as this was on the booking, so did not appreciate the tone of the email!

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The pub which is nothing to do with the site.

Disliked: The site was unkempt and needed lots of attention. Door lock on toilet fell off. Showers barely dribbled and the water didn't run away. Everything was chargeable. The grass hadn't been cut. It was on a busy road with no footpath. Buses do not run Sundays or bankholidays. No shops near by for provisions. No recycling and the bin area is a mess.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: No children. Very quiet. Heated toilet block. Proximity to local attractions. Great pub virtually on site with great food.

Disliked: Very tatty site, needs lots of refurbishment. Grass not cut, weeds on gravel. Broken entry gates. Rubbish left around the site on an old pitch and by the rubbish bins. Not into recycling rubbish. Old shower block in car park paint flaking off. Have to pay 20p for showers, one of which only dribbled out in the ladies. Broken lock on one toilet door. Cracked toilet seat in disabled toilet.
Owner was never there to ask anything. Always out shopping according to his sign. For the pitch cost it's probably the worse site we have been to gor many years.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Small and quiet site, nicely kept pitches, modern toilet and shower block, lovely shrubs and trees, bird song, great pub next to site, with lovely food, good location.

Disliked: Long list of rules, some of which were a bit odd, 20p coins needed for showers, we had no coins, long term residents had dogs off lead at times despite short lead requirement rules, next to kids play area of pub, random kid playing football on site which was no problem but strange on an adult only site, main gate post really loose and needs attention.

From the manager: Thank you for you're feedback - we're glad that you enjoyed the location and facilities at our park. Information ref 20p coins being needed to operate the showers is included in our booking emails - we're sorry that you missed that. We actually have a new gate/gate post on order, so this will be replaced shortly :-)

Liked: Check-in was smooth and hassle-free. The location is stunning, with a peaceful atmosphere and spotless, well-maintained toilet and shower facilities. The pub next to the site was a real highlight—serving an incredible roast dinner and even offering breakfast in the morning. Highly recommend!

Route directions

The site is at the bottom of the car park for the Rodney Stoke Inn. Customers with caravans and motorhomes are advised not to let a satnav direct you down New Road (which leads from the gliding club to the bottom of Draycott village), as this road is dangerous for large vehicles and towed units and it is likely to cause damage to your vehicle. Instead it is better to approach on the main road from either Axbridge or Wells.

Local attractions

Smashing Cheddar (10 minutes’ drive) offers up its gorge for climbing and caves for exploring as well as cheese- and cider-tasting opportunities. Wookey Hole Caves (both 10 minutes) have more subterranean caverns and a dinosaur-themed walk. If you’d rather pursue a more sedate pastime, golfing is close by at the Isle of Wedmore (15 minutes) and Mendip Springs (25 minutes) golf clubs, or you can try crazy golf at Cheddar too. The seaside town of Weston-super-Mare (35 minutes) makes a popular day trip for a romp through local history at the Weston Museum, a poke around the Helicopter Museum and a stroll down the Grand Pier, or you can board a paddle steamer for a cruise along the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel. Fans of city-based doings can easily get to the buzzy quayside restaurants and indie shopping scene of Bristol (50 minutes) – while heritage devotees should head for Bath (45 minutes) for its renowned Thermae Bath Spa, remains of Roman baths, the Jane Austen Centre and year-round festivals.
