  • Simple Somerset farm pitches in a handy spot close to the A38
  • Cheddar Gorge and Burnham-on-Sea beach 10 minutes' drive
  • Riverside location in Lower Weare; village pub a minute's walk away
Seeking a slice of Somerset serenity – but without the need to negotiate lots of little winding roads? Somewhere that you can soak up the rural views but also find plenty of attractions and activities nearby? Peak View Gardens is just the place – this chilled-out campsite is on the banks of the River Axe in Lower Weare, and it’s just off the A38 for easy journeys in and out. The village location is a handy one, as it means you’ll be a mere minute’s walk from the local pub (a family-friendly place with a skittle alley as well as home-cooked food and plenty of local beers and ciders to sample). If you’d rather cook your own dinner, that’s fine too – guests are welcome to bring along a barbecue and pick up supplies from the butcher or supermarket in Cheddar (10 minutes’ drive away). Cheddar is, of course, also the place to pick up some cheese for your picnic lunch – and home to one of the area’s top attractions in the form of Cheddar Gorge. Other ways to fill your days around here might include hitting the beach, visiting one of the local animal parks, heading underground at Wookey Hole or exploring the pretty streets and cathedral in the tiny city of Wells (England’s smallest city, in fact). As the site’s on the edge of the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there’s also the option of getting out for a scenic walk – with the closest route being the one up Crook’s Peak, right next to the site. This is a peaceful and simple site with hot running water, but guests do have access to a shower and portable toilets.

What customers say

This is a clean, well-maintained campsite with friendly owners and lovely views. Visitors praised the new and clean toilet and shower facilities, and the spacious bell tents. The alpacas were a highlight for many, especially families. While the site is generally quiet and peaceful, some noted occasional noise from a nearby main road. A lack of on-site electric hook-ups and a desire for a small tea/coffee shop were mentioned.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked We were able to drive to our pitch and unload, but after that cars were parked in the car park. This was great as it meant you could play ball games ect on the site without the worry of hitting any cars. The space was great and not too overcrowded which meant we were able to set up badminton and play some camp games. We were also pleasantly surprised that the site had alpacas, these were cute. The facilities were adequate. We also managed to do a walk literally from the site on the last day without the need of driving which was great.

Disliked The showers were very temperamental in the sense that they were either freezing cold or boiling hot. We were able to manage with body showers, but hair washing was difficult. I'm not sure how you would manage with a young child.

Bell tent

Liked The campsite was lovely and in a gorgeous location. It's quite small which I preferred because it meant it was pretty quiet. Having the alpacas next to the field was the best part!
The toilets were clean (apart from bins not being emptied). We would definitely come back again.

Disliked The only thing I would say is the bell tents were very close together. There's probably 1/1.5m between each tents guide ropes which doesn't provide much privacy or space to sit next to your tent. Fortunately there were only a couple of others there so it was okay, but I bet fully booked it would have been more difficult.

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review, and apologies the bins were not emptied more regularly, I have fed this back to the team!

Really nice small field for camping with the family.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked New and clean facilities. Well kept ground. Easy to find and good facilities nearby. Alpacas were absolutely adorable!! Good communication from Dani. The pizza van on Friday was fab! Make sure you take a bbq or fire pit as there aren't made fire pits.

Disliked Wouldn't describe it as wild camping as you were assigned spaces and it was a well kept field. Not necessary a negative, just make sure you know what to expect as lots of families were there and felt less wild than we normally choose. Also there was no hot water at peak times, and a queue for the toilets/shower (this probably isn't normally an issue though!)

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review, apologies if 'wild' camping was little misleading, allocating pitches has been a new thing this year to resolve some issues from last year and avoid a check in process. Hot water issue has now been fixed, we hope you look to visit again next year.

Liked What a lovely place in a fantastic location! Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Great central location for exploring. Loved the simplicity of the site. Lovely clean toilets and showers, owners there all the time cleaning and topping up! We messaged with questions and always got a fast reply. Loved the alpacas! Very neat site :)

Disliked Nothing that the campsite could fix, on a couple of busier nights people felt quite close! Maybe having some firewood on sale for campfires?!
