  • Small and quiet farm with miles of walks all around
  • Half an hour's drive from the Jurassic Coast
  • Modern facilities, fishing ponds and campfires allowed
Farm the crew out to Moonfleet Farm if you fancy a small and quiet place set in the Dorset countryside, with room for the kids to exhaust their energy among the fields and designated walking areas to let the dog off the lead. You might also rather fancy the 10-minute walk direct from the farm along the 'smugglers' footpath' to the local village shop and pub, then home to settle down in front of a roaring campfire for food and sunset vistas over the distant Blackmore Vale… Moonfleet is a working sheep farm on the western edge of the village of Higher Ansty, quiet and rural enough for a peaceful getaway, but easily accessible to main Dorset attractions and about half an hour from the Dorset coast. It has miles of local walks snaking its surroundings, and fishing ponds on site at which to land rudd, roach, barbel, crucian carp, tench and perch. Day and weekly fishing tickets can be bought from the team. The farm has modern amenitiess including a shower and toilet block with underfloor heating and hairdryers, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point, drinking water taps and a laundry room with a free washing machine and a coin-operated tumble dryer. Showers, the hairdryers and wifi are all free.

Electric optional grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Relaxed site, generous flat pitches - we pitched the tent on the caravan side so we could use the electric hook-up (bring hard ground tent pegs if you are doing that). Clean facilities, never had to queue although it was quiet when we were there. Offered firewood every evening brought to your pitch - braziers and fire pits available. Kids loved the rope swings and stroking the horses but spent most of their time playing on a pile of gravel!

Disliked: Nothing

Electric optional grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Lovely views, fishing ponds were pretty but maybe a little too much weed , fire pits were a lovely touch and showers had good water pressure. Nice walk to the pub . Definitely a
nice site for adults

Disliked: Farm dogs roaming around the pitches , one went in our awning while our dog was in there which was stressful as our dog was eating and because they are free roaming there is a lot of dog poo around which my husband stepped in once and our neighbours had 2 on their pitch. Also the exercise pool/hot tub was well below par and the owner came in twice when we were int there to lecture us about it even though we were being respectfull and having to put the cover on after we used it was hard as I have just had a hysterectomy and wasn't supposed to lift anything that heavy. He even approached our neighbours on the last day to ask if they had been in there ? Which was weird as you have to book it so surely he knew who had paid and booked . It felt too precious and I wish we hadn't used it .

Electric optional grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great facilities, my son especially liked watching the ostriches. There was also a great pub a 10 min (or 20 min with poorly dog and small child) walk away where we all had a great meal.

Disliked: Nothing, even after a night of torrential rain we could drive away easily.

Local attractions

The walks around Moonfleet Farm along local lanes and through scenic Dorset countryside lead to the likes of pretty local village Milton Abbas, Milton Abbey, Athelhampton House, Cerne Abbas and sending the kids into fits of giggles when they spy mighty chalk Cerne Giant etched into the hillside. Arf. A heap of other Dorset history is a little further afield, such as that at the former Saxon cathedral of Sherborne Abbey, or at historic houses and gardens, abbeys and churches. Also go for Corfe Castle on the Isle of Purbeck and potter around the county town of Dorchester with the Dinosaur Museum, Dorchester Museum, Teddy Bear Museum, Tutankhamen Exhibition and the Roman Amphitheatre. (Have a look at the Thomas Hardy Trail and weekly market in Dorchester too.) Wareham, Swanage, Weymouth, and Salisbury are easily accessible by car and have enough to do to keep you going for several weeks; among our many recommendations are puffing along on award-wining and steamy Swanage Railway, seeing Salisbury's splendid cathedral, wandering around the RSPB reserve at Weymouth or hiking the 15 or so miles of the spectacular Purbeck Way. Fishing fan? Investigate the waters around the harbours of Poole and Weymouth.
