  • Dog-friendly wildlife haven on a Dorset smallholding with sea views
  • A 10-minute drive from Charmouth and 15 minutes from Lyme Regis
  • Walks nearby and woods behind the site; firepits are provided
Just decided on a Jurassic Coast holiday? Whether it’s fossil hunting on the beach, wind-swept coastal hikes or exploring arty Bridport (20 minutes’ drive) you have in mind, Brig’s Farm should prove to be a splendid base. This 12-acre smallholding sitting among the gentle hills of west Dorset is a wildlife haven, with an informal, quiet atmosphere where guests are encouraged to soak up the distant sea views and the sounds of nature, well removed from loud music and rowdy parties. You can set up a firepit when the sun goes down, or gather by the wood-fired oven on pizza nights, and wait for your margherita to come out piping hot, ready to be devoured. (Book in advance, and please note that pizza nights are weather-dependent.) A coffee shack on site sells hot drinks and cakes. There are composting toilets and showers on site, so you should feel nice and fresh no matter how much walking you do in the day – and there are lots of gorgeous walks locally, plus woods behind the site that you can explore with your canine buddy, who is a very welcome guest here. Brig’s Farm is about 10 minutes by car from the coastal village of Charmouth, which is famed for its fossils. It’ll take you about an hour to get to the village on foot, and then you can reward yourself with a pint, some fish and chips and/or a paddle in the sea.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We were overjoyed to find such a special spot. A beautiful view looking over a valley, with the sea on the horizon. We kept telling ourselves hope lucky we were. We loved the basics. The showers were toasty warm of an evening and a great day to wind down for the day.

Each night we watched the sun set with a proper fire to make it cosy. And then the moon rose behind us. Getting to other places was easy, and we are really keen to come back.

My partner was overjoyed that there were compost toilets. It took her right back to her childhood in Hungary. I have to admit to being a little unsure, but they were far more pleasant than any other camp toilets.

And on top of all that, there were beautiful apple trees in the campsite. We do hope the owner is able to do something with them. They look so enticing.

Disliked: Leaving!

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: I stumbled upon this hidden gem in the middle of one of the most difficult times of my life. Initially booking two nights and continuing to extend ending up spending about 10 nights here. What can I say it’s bliss. It was so peaceful and healing I didn’t want to ever leave. I can’t express enough gratitude to the owner and his beautiful dog who befriended me throughout my stay. The showers are better than any hotel I’ve ever stayed in even and the water is so fresh and pure I didn’t need to filter it like I would usually from a tap. Those who know, know!

Disliked: The fact I had to leave and return to normal life 😭

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Everything!
Small site, lovely setting and the best showers! Very close to attractions and the park and ride into Lyme. very easy for Charmouth too but away from the huddle and bustle. We will absolutely return here!
Excellent recycling set up.
There are three areas suitable for a large family or group around a fire pit which looked really nice if you were with friends. The rest of the pitches are in a large circle with a fire pit to each one.
Mowed pathways through longer grass, on the way to showers etc.

Disliked: Slightly tricky up and down the steeper bit of the drive to the lane where the rain had washed away bit bits of the hardcore, but only a minor issue we did make it in and out.

Liked: Spectacular views and great facilities. The campsite is in a great location for local exploring and access to beaches. It’s kept very well maintained and clean. Although we didn’t manage to sample the coffee and cake available - we’ll be back to do so next time!

Liked: Fantastic stay, beautiful views and delicious pizzas provided by the owner on Friday night. I made a mistake while booking and assumed I had paid for the 4th night so we left our campervan on site all day, when I realised my mistake on return the owner was really understanding and accommodating, no issues at all.

Local attractions

Lemurs, wallabies and meerkats are among the residents at Axe Valley Wildlife Park (10 minutes’ drive), where you can also book experiences with the animals – from supervised handling sessions to shadowing the keepers as they prepare food and clean enclosures. The Mary Anning Rocks Statue at Lyme Regis (15 minutes) honours this important 19th-century palaeontologist. You can follow in her footsteps here and go fossil hunting on the beach. Don’t worry if you fail to spot any ammonites: you can always pick one up from the local souvenir shops, or discover all about fossils and the Jurassic Coast at the Lyme Regis Museum. In addition to a long pebbly beach popular for swimming and watersports, the seaside town of Seaton (20 minutes) has a pretty marina and fishing harbour. The South West Coastal Path runs along the seafront, with a wide esplanade for waterfront strolls, or you can take a scenic ride on the vintage-style Seaton Tramway.
