Devon or Cornwall? Cornwall or Devon? It is, of course, one of life’s dilemmas… but thankfully one that’s easily sorted with a stay at Chapmanswell Caravan Park, a Devon holiday park that’s close to the border with Cornwall and in a most handy spot for getting out to enjoy the spoils of both counties. This park five minutes drive from the village of St Giles on the Heath ticks all sorts of boxes for all sorts of holidays: it’s a family-friendly and dog-friendly place, handily close to the A30 (five miles away) for travels and days out, and with some splendid views over the Tamar Valley and Dartmoor. Even with all that on offer, there’s a highlight still to come – and that’s the site’s own clubhouse, The Anglers Rest, with a bar and grill that’s open all week during peak season (1 March-12 September) and between Wednesday and Sunday during the low season (13 September-28 February) and weekly live entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays during peak season (generally from 7pm to 10.30pm). The kitchen serves up top-notch food and there’s also a pool table, dartboard, fruit machines and a dance floor to keep the good times rolling. Ice creams, sweets, alcohol and assorted essentials can be picked up at the site shop (they’ve even got doggy ice cream to get four-legged family members in on the holiday vibes…) Other facilities on site include a covered play area and a dog exercise area, along with a coin-operated launderette, a washing-up area and chemical disposal point. The bathroom facilities have baby changing facilities and central heating plus separate male, female and disabled shower areas. Reception is open seven days a week, and the owners live on site so you can always get hold of someone if you need anything.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Friendly staff and clean facilities

Disliked: Booked into here last Dec but weather warnings meant we had to postpone our visit which they held a credit for.
On arrival there was a mix up with our planned pitch and we had to move to another pitch. Apparently the people on our pitch should have checked out but were still there???
Apparently people have been moving around a lot and the owners couldn't keep track of who was where.
All became clear as the night went on as the pitch we were given was (31) right under a bright lamp post which shone through our camper window ALL NIGHT. I assume the previous occupants moved to avoid a second sleepless night.
The facilities are generally clean and tidy and drinks are well priced in the bar. If I return I think we will be wise to this trick now as there is only one lamp post on the site and stay well away!!!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Errrr Honestly nothing. maybe the undercover little playground but even that was rough

Disliked: The fact you arrive pitch up says and the campsite says report to reception/shop.
It was closed.

Had to find someone in the clubhouse/bar that looked really rough and was treated by this very uninterested looking woman and this young lad. we followed the lad to our pitch to which had ran off before we could ask where everything was.
No communication of where the toilets, showers, wash area water was.

I had to go in the clubhouse again to ask where the toilet was! Bad vibes as i walk in and everyone just stares at you like your the odd chicken.

showers and toilets were attached to the bar area and not separate so people would be coming in all the time when you go for a shower so i decided not to rap as they didn't look the greatest anyway. the between the tiles didn't look inviting either.

The worst part.
The litrially put us very close to the clubhouse.
We have a young family. the music was booming and i mean booming till 12am when it says on their profile 8.30 till 10.30 no later! and that went on for 2nights!!!!!! you would think they would of put us further out there was another field not even being used!!!

one day it was raining and the kids were getting soaked in the undercover playground because the wind was blowing in so i thought you would of had some side protection aswell.

the washing area was shocking. the temp was so luke warm we struggled to clean our dishes. it's a push tap so the boiler would kick in for 2 seconds before it thinks it's turned off so hardly heated the water and it took forever.

the ground was not level. our tent flooded but luckily the weather was fine after that.
we were going to book a carvery at the restraint /clubhouse as we've heard good things but as every time i've been in i was stared at and felt uncomfortable and the place with its squeaky floors looked rough we went out to eat instead

didn't speak to a member of staff because the way they made me feel and it was just too much to go on about

nearly left the next day when we found out there would be booming music again. every time someone went outside it was worse. then people would play their music loud after it was over and then it woke my 2 year old so only ended up getting 2 h sleep!!!

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Brilliant weekend at Chapmanswell Caravan Park! Thoroughly enjoyed everything about it. From the live music to the amenities, everything is well organised, clean and everyone was so friendly and welcoming. Had a top night in The Anglers Rest - the country singer was spot on and really entertaining! We can’t wait to come back!

The only thing I can’t comment on is the WiFi - we didn’t use it so no idea how good it is.

Disliked: Nothing

Liked: We booked a hard standing pitch recently but weather warnings stopped us travelling so we asked for a.refund of our fee. We were offered a credit to be used at later stage and I am awaiting confirmation of how we use and document to this credit due from the site.
I have emailed twice but am yet to here a reply 🤷

Local attractions

The only issue with staying close to the Devon/Cornwall border is the possibility of being overwhelmed by options for days out… so perhaps it’s sensible to start somewhat local with a visit to Launceston Castle (10 minutes’ drive) or a day of meeting cute creatures at the Tamar Otter & Wildlife Centre (15 minutes)? Alternatively, of course, you could set forth straight away for the seaside – there’s so much fab coastline around here but you’ll likely find some of the highlights to be the beaches and surf schools of Bude (25 minutes) and Widemouth Bay (half an hour). If you’re more into strolling along cobbled lanes, the fishing villages of Boscastle (the one with the witches museum) and Port Isaac (the one where they filmed Doc Martin) are both within a 45-minute drive. Other coastal spots to check out include Tintagel Castle (40 minutes), a place of much Arthurian legend, and the maritime city of Plymouth (55 minutes), home to the UK’s largest aquarium and a stonking gin distillery.
