  • Self-contained glamping lodge in a central Devon location
  • A 15-minute drive from Dartmoor National Park; 35 minutes from Exeter
  • Kitchenette, wetroom and outside space; pub 10 minutes' walk away
How’s this as a cosy little spot for some Devon downtime? The glamping lodge at Vennlake is just the place for a peaceful retreat surrounded by countryside but only an easy 15-minute drive from Crediton (mostly along a main road; no wending your way along little lanes around here…). All is set up here to be splendidly self contained: the lodge has been well kitted out with all sorts of handy things including a wetroom, a spacious living area (with TV for lazy evenings) and a kitchenette that’s got a hot plate, kettle, microwave and fridge. A small supermarket is a couple of minutes’ walk away to stock this latter with whatever treats/drinks/brekkie bits you fancy – and anything you pick up can be consumed either cuddled up on the sofa or out on the deck for added fresh air and views. Need some rather more substantial sustenance? Take a 10-minute walk to the local pub for dinner – a meal or pint at this 16th-century gem is a fine reward for any efforts you put on on local walks or lengthier rambles in the Dartmoor National Park, 15 minutes’ drive away. If Dartmoor’s not part of your plans, there are plenty of other things to fill your days with: Vennlake’s nifty central Devon location means that it’s easy enough to hit either coast, take days out in Exeter or find rural activities like fishing, horse riding or nosing around National Trust estates.

Jack's bunkhouse

Liked: Staff friendly, facilities more than expected ie folding chairs supplied and a little hot plate. Liked LED Lights in bunkhouse for a bit of variety.Loved outside area as bunkhouse separate to main caravan pitches so privacy and we could have a bbq without affecting others..

Disliked: Didn’t realise steps so steep up to sleeping area, maybe could show in pictures but managed fine!

Kingfisher lodge

Liked: Loved the site, it was so quiet. The check in was easy and the little lodge was perfect for us and our dog. It was clean and well equipped and a had a very comfortable bed. Great communication from the owner. It was excellent value for money and we would definitely stay here again.

Disliked: Would have been nice to have had a bit of cooking oil and some blackout curtains over the little portholes where the bunkbeds are.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for you feed back, I will look in to some small covers for the portholes.

Lovely place to stay for a decent price.

Jack's bunkhouse

Liked: Friendly staff, peaceful atmosphere, accommodation was in many ways so much nicer than I expected.
Good job Jack!

Disliked: Not much to dislike. Lights flash in time with fridge throughout night which did make it a little tricky to sleep!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for the review and sorry about the lights flashing, I will look into this.

Another great stay, my daughter loved Jack's Bunkhouse again.

Jack's bunkhouse

Liked: Very peaceful and relaxed. Very short walk to a Coop and a local garden centre with a cafe. Would recommend Jack's Den as long as you bring warm clothing in winter. Lovely view. Good walks (on Ordnance Survey Maps download) locally.

Disliked: Toilet I used would benefit from a basin in it.

Local attractions

Dartmoor National Park’s got to be top of the list if you’re heading here to hike: a 15-minute drive gets you over there to wander around the wide open spaces, with wildlife, villages and views galore to spot along the way (and cream teas to sustain you too…) There are three swimming pools within a 15-minute drive too, should you fancy a dip on your way back to base. The natural sights are splendid indeed but they’ve got plenty of rivals among the local architecture too: smart Castle Drogo and the medieval ruins of Okehampton Castle are both about 25 minutes’ drive away and worth a wander, or it’s a 35-minute drive to Exeter to see its ornate cathedral. For more of a glimpse into the inner workings of traditional life, pay a visit to the old forge Finch Foundry or the Museum of Dartmoor Life; both are about 15 minutes’ drive away. Dartmoor and Exmoor zoos are both about an hour away if you’d rather spend a bit of time in the company of a collection of animals.
