Woolacombe, here you come. Grab your phone and get Insta-ready for your sojourn at American School Bus Glamping at Woolacombe. Freshly retired from the highways of Houston, ‘Texas’ is a bright-yellow, split-screen bus and a total icon to all US school kids. This snappily converted bus is surprisingly spacious, with enough room for up to six guests to manoeuvre about the place without tripping over each other. Care has been taken to create a proper kitchen with all you need to serve up supper at the up-cycled table. Not into self-catering? There’s a farm shop on site serving hot food all day in high season. Stay cosy thanks to underfloor heating, while the woodburning stove adds that little bit of extra warmth if the weather turns sour. If it does pour with rain, just dig out the books and games on the bus and plonk yourself down on the sofa until the clouds disappear. The mix of single, sofa and king-size beds all come with Egyptian cotton bedding, and all have views right to the sea through the bus windows. Lots of little touches make your stay on Texas extra-special: a power shower with fluffy towels and complimentary toiletries, an illuminated mirror for shaving, a socket for hairdryers and a freezer for ice in your all-important G&T. Moving outside, the bus sits in peaceful countryside, with a picnic table, firepit and barbecue so you can enjoy the alfresco life to its maximum (when the weather permits, of course).

Local attractions

Texas the bus sits on a larger campsite with bags of family-friendly facilities, including a play area and bike hire if you want to explore this popular and pretty corner of Devon. On site there’s also a zipwire ride that will have you zooming above the trees with views right to the sea in the Bristol Channel. Talking of the sea, Woolacombe Beach (10 minutes’ drive) is a famed destination for surfers, with the strands at Saunton Sands and Putsborough Beach (both 20 minutes) close by for more action on the waves. If you want to spend time on a quieter beach, Lee Bay is 10 minutes away by car or bus. Turning inland, you can treat the kids to days out on mini-trains trundling around Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park (20 minutes), or get hands-on with lemurs during keeper talks at Exmoor Zoological and Conservation Centre (25 minutes). Younger kids will definitely also love cuddling Shetland ponies and spring lambs at The BIG Sheep (40 minutes).
