Pitches around the park

  • On 70 acres of landscaped parkland close to Exmoor
  • South Molton 10 minutes' drive; 40 minutes from sandy beaches
  • Three fishing lakes, shop and country club with bar and restaurant
If a caravan park has 'Riverside' in its name, you might reckon you might get some fishing. And you'd be right: South Molton's Riverside Caravan and Camping Park has three specimen lakes stocked with quality carp, and more exploring can be availed of at the nearby river Mole. The site sits on 70 acres of landscaped parkland with ten acres of mature woodland running alongside the river Mole: as you might also reckon, it's all mighty pretty. Riverside is a family-friendly park with a modern reception and a shop stocked with local produce from across north Devon as well as gifts, toys and everyday essentials. It has a play area as well as a country club with a bar and restaurant, serving homemade food and a selection of local lagers, ciders and ales. It's a popular venue for the variety of entertainment on site, or for settling down for a quiet time during the day to use the wifi service.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Fishing lakes were great.
Facilities good and reception very helpful

Disliked: Fishing should be booked and payed for as a few booked and didn’t show. If you have paid maybe be more considerate and turn up. Few people walked by and said they tried to book.
Didn’t affect us though.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The club house & really nice food. Good barman. Liked the picnic tables on each pitch

Disliked: The shower block. No private places to brush teeth, not enough hooks in shower and nowhere to sit to dry your feet. Notice tells you to leave clean but no brush to use. Quite often the toilets were dirty. Have to pay £10 refundable for getting back in on site. The dog walk is a quite a walk from site before you can take lead off your dog.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The site was very well equipped with plenty of clean facilities, a great bar which served decent pub grub and a Sunday carvery too.
Plenty of room on the hard standing pitches with a dedicated picnic bench.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. My electric hook up cable was a little too short but they were able to loan me an extension cable.
Very convenient for Barnstaple and the surrounding areas, easy to find with plenty of places to take my dog for a walk, including an enclosed field which he loved, it's just a shame that it rained for one out of the two days I was there.

Disliked: Not so much a dislike, more a suggestion. A stool in the showers would be useful to put things on, plenty of hooks but somewhere to sit would be useful while drying your feet.

Local attractions

If you'd prefer something more active than fishing, it's a 15-minute drive to Exmoor National Park for miles of scenic walks, mountain bike trails and lots more outdoorsy antics. Canoeing at Wimbleball Lake and beginners' climbing at Valley of Rocks are among the popular picks, as are pony treks and horse riding days through countryside and along the coast. Speaking of the coast, there's much to enjoy here too: head west for the surf beaches around Croyde and Appledore, or north to Ilfracombe for more beach, the aquarium and boat trips to the island of Lundy. It'll take you 40 minutes or so to hit either stretch of coast. Kid-friendly days out nearby include heritage rides on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway (half an hour's drive), animal encounters at Exmoor Zoo (20 minutes) and Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (half an hour) and easy pedals along the traffic-free Tarka Trail from Barnstaple (15 minutes).
