A wooded valley short walk from a sandy beach, cabins among greenery in a hillside wildlife haven, and a secluded setting that's still close to coast and city... blessed peace and spectacular scenery reigns at Churchwood Valley in south Devon. It's only seven miles to lively Plymouth from these colourful grounds, but Churchwood Valley is peaceful and remote, in a wooded valley running down to the sea and sandy beach of Wembury 10 minutes' walk away. You can access the South West Coast Path from Wembury, which is a nifty base for days out around Devon, Cornwall and Dartmoor. Accommodation is in luxury cabins, among thick foliage on the hillside. Each cabin has its own spacious area, surrounded by trees, colourful flowers, shrubs and hedges: you'll spot birds aplenty here without even stirring outside, and more wildlife including foxes and squirrels from the private patio. Churchwood Valley is home to over a hundred different species of birds, including the rare cirl bunting, whose habitat includes a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) on the site's land. The beach is part of a voluntary marine conservation area; the Marine Centre just above a café and has an interpretation centre and a base for wardens who guide the frequent rockpool rambles during high season. The park has no bars, restaurants or noisy entertainment, just a secluded and serene south Devon setting. Even so, you don't have to venture far for supplies, as the Churchwood team runs a well-stocked licensed shop selling eats, drinks and beach kit. A launderette is also on site.

  • The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. XL Bully, Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).
  • The grocery shop is open between 27/03 and 02/11.
  • Due to the park's location on the side of a valley, much of the access is not suitable to those with mobility problems.

Liked: Very welcoming and helpful staff.
Close walking distance to Wembury Beach.
High quality bedding and equipment in the lodge.
Lovely bird life!

Disliked: Nothing disliked.
We needed to keep an eye on our toddler grandchild when walking around the site, some steep slopes.

Liked: Loved the quiet cosy vibe of the whole place. So beautiful and near to a great little beach.. the cabin itself is a little old school but still perfectly cosy for two of us. Loved being in nature.

Liked: Great location only a short walk to a cove. There are scenic walks both ways along the coast.
There are two pubs within walking distance with friendly staff and good ales.

Disliked: The nearby cove does not allow dogs from May to September. But a ten minute walk along the coast path to the west there is a safe beach with a mix of shingle, coarse sand and rock that our Labrador loved.
The accommodation is a series of chalets located on a steep sided valley. Any walking therefore involves steep inclines and decents. Anyone with fitness or mobility issues should avoid.

Local attractions

It's less than a mile from the valley to Wembury beach on Devon's south coast, a stretch of sand famed for its rockpools and wildlife. Join in with a Rockpool Ramble from the Wembury Marine Centre for the best chances of seeing maximum rockpool species: crabs, starfish and sea scorpions are among the critters to see here. Hikes and coastal rambles are easily accessed too, including the Wembury Strandline walk between Wembury beach and Wembury Point, for spectacular views over the sea and out to the Great Mewstone; the maritime walk around Wembury Point, and the craggy run from Wembury beach to Heybrook Bay. For a woodland wander, take the Wembury Woods trail from the village car park. For day trips, Churchwood Valley is a 20-minute drive from Plymouth, 30 minutes from Dartmoor, and 50 minutes from both Woodlands Family Theme Park and Paignton Zoo.
