  • Peaceful family-friendly wildlife haven with meadows in Devon
  • A 15-minute drive to the beach; 20 minutes to Dartmoor National Park
  • Paddleboard hire and kayaking trips available on site
Head over a bridleway into manicured meadows and flat, mown grassland, then… settle down at Allerbrook Meadows, a family-friendly site bordered by a stream, 15 minutes’ drive from the Devon coast. Off-grid wild camping is on the cards here, so simply dump your equipment into the trailer (cars can’t use the bridleway) and pick your preferred spot. Hire out a kayak or paddleboard from the site, or take one of their kayaking trips to the river or sea… then chill out (or get toasty, rather) afterwards: campfires are permitted, and there’s a firepit with a tripod and grill (seasoned logs available at a small cost). Handily, there are several supermarkets, farm shops, cafés and restaurants within 10 minutes’ drive of the site to source some tasty treats or ingredients. Then, there’s a cooking area to craft up your concoctions, plus picnic tables and water (for washing up and cooking) from the site’s borehole, which is a short walk away. The site also has a covered shower and facilities including a composting toilet, portable toilet and a small communal fridge with a freezer for ice packs. It’s not too tricky to map out a route, as there’s wifi and electric sockets to charge devices on site. And that’s handy since there are lots of footpaths around, including circuits directly from the site – keep your eyes peeled for buzzards, herons, swallows and deer, or wildflowers and butterflies as you go. Stars, bats, owls and hedgehogs are on show after dark – when quiet time applies to ensure the animals aren’t disturbed.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We had a wonderful time at Allerbrook Meadows. Waking up to the sounds of the stream, birds and rustling trees was so relaxing. Pam and Chris were very helpful and friendly, and have created great practical solutions for an off the grid, nearly wild camping experience. There is a composting toilet, fire pit, small weber bbq, picnic table with benches, communal fridge and freezer, and a small communal gazebo with extra bits and bobs. The shower water was warm and the pressure great.
Chris went out of his way to give us local recommendations, which we really apprexiated.
We were also lucky enough to have the campsite to ourselves the last 2 nights, which was a treat!
I would definitely recommend this campsite for a quiet, nearly wild, close to nature breakaway.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We had a fantastic time at Chris and Pam's campsite. If luxury is your thing you are in the wrong place. But if you want to leave city life behind and enjoy nature then this is the place to be. It's a green oasis where you can completely unwind. Chris drives your stuff to the campsite and if you have children they can also get a ride in the back of Chris' tractor. They really loved it. And sorry Chris... I noticed that we accidentally took the Uncle Tom Cobley's song (that you so kindly printed out for us and plasticised) back home.

Disliked: The air beds ;-) . But that's not on Chris.

From the manager: Thank you Arno. That so made me laugh! I got the table mat at a Widecombe souvenir shop for our grand daughter when she was 2. She's now 14 and can eat a meal without spreading it everywhere and is now much more into Taylor Swift than Uncle Tom Cobley. The table mat has gone to a very good home! 😊

Excellent wild(er) camping location, lovely and quiet for families

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: A wonderful quiet location in a valley next to a small stream. Loads of space. A great deal of thought has gone into providing everything you could possibly want for a wilder camping experience. There are picnic benches, composting toilet, hot shower, fire pits, chiminea and kitchen gazebo with loads of little touches like flint and steel, natural fire lighters, kelly kettle, etc.
Kids loved the swing over the stream.
Owners Chris and Pam provided us with local maps and good locals advice! No running water down in the valley but multiple large water containers topped up by Chris and no chance of running out.
We also hired their kayaks which are brand new.
Met by Chris on arrival and loaded our tent etc into a small trailer which was towed down into the valley, so no hauling kit! They have put a lot of thought into keeping it as wild as possible but still having essentials. The shower is a minute or so walk from the camping area and next to it there is a shed with a fridge/freezer and power to charge phones.
Site is covered by phone signal (useful for watching the Olympics).
The whole family would highly recommend

Disliked: Lots of slugs at night!

From the manager: Thank you for that most comprehensive of reviews. We very much enjoyed hosting our 'Guests From The West' and are pleased that the home-made style of the site was appreciated by all.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Fabulous small site with really friendly and helpful hosts - thank you Chris and Pam! The site is small, but really well thought out, with a kitchen tent with stove and washing up area, picnic benches, as well as a warm shower, fridge and electric socket. They only take 3 pitches at a time and we were lucky enough to book with no one else there! It’s a short walk up to the car, but Chris shuttle runs your stuff down. Only marked down slightly for child friendliness as it’s alongside a tributary, so not suitable for really little ones, but ours loved it, especially the rope swing. We had a lovely weekend!

From the manager: We are very pleased that you appreciated the 'wild side' of the campsite and hope that you will be able to return some time for more logging, fire lighting and backwoodsman action!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Our best campsite ever! It was like wild camping but with extras included. (Picnic bench, BBQ, fire-pit, chairs). The fridge, freezer and the hot shower were very much appreciated. Chris gave us maps of some lovely walks which we did from, and back to, the site. We were always happy to return to our pitch and the sounds of nature, especially the hooting of the owls.

Disliked: Work commitments meant that we couldn’t extend our stay. ☹

From the manager: So glad you enjoyed your stay and the walks. There are more walk plans for you to try out should you decide to come again. It's good to see that the swing is not just for kids!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We have stayed at Allerbrook Meadow twice in the last 2 years and have enjoyed it very much on both occasions. It is a fantastic location for both Dartmoor and the coast with a super choice of beaches close by. The campsite is peaceful and relaxing and the setting is idyllic with a small stream running past the pitches surrounded by beautiful trees. Chris is a very helpful and kind host. A magical place to unwind - would highly recommend it!

From the manager: Thank you for that glowing review. We were very pleased that you were able to come again for another week of walking, swimming and exploration of rivers and coastline. And dam building too. Very impressive!

Local attractions

South Devon National Landscape (15 minutes’ drive) features a diverse range of habitats – from coastal areas and salt marshes, to ancient woodlands and orchards. There are spectacular clifftop walks (many of them circular) with far-reaching ocean views, or you can take a canoe ride to explore the estuaries. There are more active pursuits in Dartmoor National Park (20 minutes): walking and cycling, of course, but also horse riding. Birdwatchers head to moorland areas around the Dart Valley and Haytor Rocks to spot skylarks and cuckoos, and you might also spy the occasional otter (plus bats, after dark). For a child-centric day, visit Woodlands Family Theme Park (20 minutes), with tractor rides, a falconry centre and cuddly farm animals; or Pennywell Farm (25 minutes), which runs a lively schedule of hands-on animal activities. Want to see more exotic beasties? Dartmoor Zoo (35 minutes) has big cats, zebras and iguanas.
