  • Well-equipped north Devon resort overlooking Watermouth Harbour
  • Situated in an elevated position looking over Watermouth Harbour
  • Indoor and outdoor play areas, seasonal pool and restaurant with views
Sitting between Combe Martin and Ilfracombe (about 10 minutes’ drive to either), on the north coast of Devon, Park Life Resorts at Watermouth Lodges has log-clad, self-contained lodges scattered across 12 acres of woodland. The peaceful site overlooks elegant Watermouth Castle and Watermouth Harbour, a deep and sheltered inlet dotted with moored boats. But there’s much more to this resort than its enviable location and spectacular views. If you’re travelling with children, you can let them loose in the playground, with its miniature adventure course, while you treat yourself to a wee drink or three at the restaurant-bar. From there, you can keep a watchful eye on your offspring – or take in sweeping views of the Bristol Channel. Rainy days are no problem, either, thanks to a games room and well-equipped indoor soft play area. There's plenty to do as a family, too, starting with a heated outdoor pool (open April–September), plus a miniature golf course and tennis courts for epic holiday tournaments. Keen walkers can explore the resort’s forested trails or set off on the South West Coast Path, which runs just past the resort. And of course, it’s only a short drive to beaches like Broadsands and Hele Bay (five minutes), where you can have a swim and search for marine creatures in shallow rockpools. Back at the site, you can make dinner in your lodge or head to the restaurant for meals prepared with local produce in a cosy interior heated by a woodburning stove in winter.

3 bedroom lodge (hot tub, six person)

Liked: Location was perfect
Everything was easy to use such as the washing machine, dish washer, shower etc
Hot tub is an absolute must!
Larger lodge than expected, very good heating given the time of year.
Staff were friendly and helpful
Children ages between 6 months and 12 all had a brilliant time and slept very well.

Disliked: Windows drafty and some didn't close properly
Cleaning on arrival could have been done better, dust, dead flies in bathroom and a top found under the sofa
The path outside was very slippy near the hot tub
Signal terrible
Wi-Fi was bad
Lack of lighting on the stairs to the carpark below was very poor.

New Style 2 bedroom lodge (four person)

Liked: Glorious scenery; sea-view in some of the cabins.
Very clean.
All relevant kitchen items provided: hob, fridge, microwave (even a sharp knife).
Strong shower.
Convenient facilities (swimming pool, soft-play area, bar games for the kids).

Disliked: Accommodation was clean and everything worked, but it was quite basic given the price.
The bedrooms were so small it was difficult to walk around the double bed in one of them.
The water taps were very hard to fully close once opened.
No coffee-making facilities provided (just instant coffee sachets).
The wifi really slowed down during the day to the point of not really working sometimes.

Local attractions

Where to start with the splendid north Devon coast? Perhaps by spending some time at Tunnels Beaches (10 minutes’ drive), where a series of hand-carved Victorian galleries leads to a tidal pool and rockpools teeming with sea creatures. And while you’re there, keep an eye out for wildlife such as seals and peregrine falcons. Speaking of wildlife, Exmoor National Park (20 minutes) is home to free-roaming ponies and herds of red deer, which you should be able to spot on a walk through its vast moorlands. Exmoor is also a designated Dark Sky Reserve, so bring warm layers and stay until nightfall to spot your favourite constellation. Head to Braunton (25 minutes) to join the longest continuous off-road cycle path in the UK, part of the 180-mile Tarka Trail. You’ll be pedalling on a disused railway track and on (mostly flat) tarmac surfaces all the way to Barnstaple and on to Meeth (about 30 miles in total). To make sure you keep hydrated on your bike ride, there are plenty of pubs along the way…
