  • Dog-friendly Devon wildlife haven with peaceful woodlands
  • A 15-minute drive from Dartmoor National Park; 20 minutes from Exeter
  • Small campfires permitted and firewood available at a small cost
If you’ve been pining for a wildlife retreat, set your sights on a stay at Little Harford, surrounded by seven acres of woodland in a peaceful valley in Devon. With mature trees all around and a small river at the bottom, this is the kind of site where you'll want to pack your binoculars to spy on the site’s passing buzzards, owls, squirrels, pheasants, foxes, deer and wild birds. This is almost-wild camping with no electricity, wifi or phone signal, and facilities are kept minimal for a splendid back-to-nature stay. There are compost toilets, an off-grid shower, and a washing-up area on site – and across the road, there’s a tap in the property’s yard to tend to water bottles in need of a top-up. You'll need a good-quality torch for evening manoeuvres though. When you arrive, dump your kit in a wheelbarrow to descend the hillside. Later, prep your goodies for a small campfire, as they're permitted on site (firewood is available at a small cost). The area is kept as wild as possible, meaning just the paths and pitches are mowed, and pitches are kept to a small number to keep things pretty and peaceful. As there’s no rubbish collection, guests take it with them at the end of their stay to protect the wildlife. Don’t feel like you’re completely cut off here though, as the site is under 10 minutes’ drive from the A30 (reach the centre of Exeter 20 minutes’ drive away and the edge of Dartmoor National Park in 15 minutes). A five-minute drive away, there's also Tedburn St Mary, a village with a small food shop and a pub for tasty eats.

Liked: Little Hartford is sublime.
Remote, peaceful and beautiful everything we love.
Rachel was so kind and hospitable. We loved that she came and spoke with us and we're especially interested in hearing about her family's legacy on the land and how she is now sharing it with others.
The woods where we stayed were well maintained with clear pathways and our dog loved the dell with the stream at the bottom.
Clean toilets and the hot shower was a luxury.
Looking forward to rebooking.

Disliked: Limited internet service in the area. Not a problem for me but my husband struggled.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Little Harford was exactly as advertised: tranquil and basic, which is what I was looking for. What I didn't expect was the warm welcome from the owner, who went out of her way to give me a guided tour of the facilities (shower, loos, glamping pod etc etc) on my arrival. I would most definitely stay again......lovely spot.....xxx

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Camped in the meadow by the woods. Only one other camper far away and a couple up in the glamping pod up in the woods. So we really felt like it was our space. Lovely!

Beautiful site that is all about the setting and peace. Simple facilities but all that we needed for one night. It's almost like a wild camp but with the bonus of a mowed field - less chance of ticks - and a compost loo. There's a drinking water tap at the farm and a wheelbarrow to take your things down to the field from the parking. It's a bit steep but fine with a few loads.

Had a perfect evening under the stars with a fire pit. The owners and folks there are lovely and really helpful. There is no signal on your phone so make sure you know where you're going and keep an eye out for the chalkboard signs. .y friend overshot and I had to wait quite a long time for him to return down the lane after he'd been all around the area! :)

Not for people with access issues due to the slopes. But otherwise highly recommended for a simple, back to nature stay under the stars. We hope the return.

We were two adults but it would be child friendly as it's just a nice back to nature place with a little brook to play by like I used to love as a kid and you could do baked potatoes and marshmallows on the fire pit.

Disliked: The gas fired shower wasn't working but we were fine as it was only one night.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Thoroughly enjoyed the stay. So quiet. Rustic and clean. Very much ‘at one with nature’. Excellent host and great value for money.

Disliked: Depends on your view point, but pub and shop is good walking distance from the camp. Limited internet connection but that was a bonus for us.

Local attractions

If you’ve already conquered the local woodland walks and bridleways, Dartmoor National Park has plenty more trails to tackle. The National Trust’s Fingle Bridge (20 minutes’ drive) has peaceful woodland walks along the river Teign. For a steeper climb, Belstone Tor (25 minutes) passes a Stone Age circle to a scenic viewpoint. A little deeper into the national park, Chagford (25 minutes) is a stannary town with traditional thatched roofs, and Fernworthy Reservoir (35 minutes) has nature trails, picnic areas and fly fishing. While there are plenty of adventures inland, the coast also has its own playground, whether you prefer a traditional seaside or resort or the smaller coves of Sidmouth (45 minutes). If you want the former, perhaps head to the lido, beach and pier at Teignmouth beach (35 minutes) or the watersports centre at Exmouth beach (40 minutes), which also has a long sandy stretch and rockpools to rummage through.
