Downends striking sunsets
The beautiful sunset over a t5
That sunset

  • Peaceful two-acre site five minutes’ walk from Croyde Beach
  • Ilfracombe 25 minutes’ drive; Watermouth Castle half an hour
  • Café and bar; surf school, surfboard hire and beach shop on site
It’s quite alright if you want to unwind all day long at Downend Point Campsite, in the peaceful North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Mind you, you may find that quite hard with there being two surfing beaches nearby, both accessible via the South West Coast Path: Croyde Beach (five minutes’ walk) and Saunton Sands (half an hour on foot). Yes, you’re in quite the surfer’s playground here… Backed by sand dunes, Croyde Beach is popular with swimmers and surfers, although rockpooling and relaxing may help while away a few hours too. There’s a lifeguard service between May and September, and dogs are welcome on the beach outside of these months. Another walk along the South West Coast Path takes you to the Baggy Point Cliffs (45 minutes), or you can head inland to Croyde village centre (15 minutes), where you might decide to stop in one of the two pubs for a drink. Downend has its own café-bar too, which serves beer and wine, plus Sri Lankan curries, through the day and evening. Time it right, and you’ll get to see one of the site’s stunning sunsets over dinner. There’s also a surf school, surfboard hire and a beach shop on site. Clean and bordered by heather and hedgerows, the site has two acres of land. Facilities include clean, modern toilets, coin-operated hot showers and a washing-up area.

Liked: Welcomed by the most friendly staff.
Campsite was very easy to find.
Most gorgeous spot overlooking the sea.
Clean and tidy.
Very minimal but we like this.
Can’t beat the views.
Curry place next door is just incredible - so tasty.
Quiet even though Skybar was on. Just loved our stay will return next year.

Disliked: Not enough toilets and having to pay for showers.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The view is amazing, the field is right on the beach.
The toilets and shower block are clean and are good facilities.

Disliked: £1 fee for 5 mins in the shower. Although I can understand given energy prices. Perhaps make this clearer on the pitchup page.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Great location, five minutes down to the beach, wonderful views across Croyde Bay and ideal for sunsets. Coastal path offers great walks, and dogs are allowed in the sand dunes. Fabulous cafe in the car park next door, and the brilliant Lords of Down End surf school and rental shop were superb, friendly and welcoming. The guys at the campsite were helpful, especially in using the blocks to level up.

Disliked: The site is not level, and although it’s not denied, it needs to be called out a lot better, so that people are better prepared for what it’s like. Toilets and shower are the public ones in the car park. You have to remember to get a token to use the shower within the 8-8 opening times, and choose your time wisely to avoid having to queue to use the one shower. It’s a well managed field, and for that, it is expensive for what it is.

Liked: We loved our stay, the staff were all amazing, the facilities great and the view just incredible!!!

We couldn’t have asked for more, we have stayed in Croyde many times and this is by far the best campsite for ultra chill, listening to the sea and great vibe for food and drink whilst watching the sunset!!

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Lovely view over Croyde bay. The site is small and shares a public car park and facilities. You need levelling chocks plus wood ! Of which Henry provides. There is a small cafe bar and Sri Lanka curry shack. Henry is vey helpful in advice and local information.
There is a bus stop outside the site which goes to Barnstable and back and the beach is just across the road approximately 200 yds.
£1 token for a 5min shower which is not the best. This needs improvement to get the value of the pound.

Disliked: Facilities
