Camping at meadowsweet

  • Rustic and peaceful sustainable farm site on the north Devon coast
  • A five-minute drive to Saunton Sands; 15 minutes to Barnstaple
  • Communal campfire and portable fire troughs; access to the Tarka Trail
Green-fingered guests will surely find like-minded folk at Meadowsweet Farm, on the north Devon coast. Bearing homegrown fruit and veg for the local community and rearing rare-breed animals such as the endangered Suffolk Punch horse, this site is a fast-track route back to nature five minutes’ drive from Saunton Sands and 15 minutes from Barnstaple. It's a place where the peace, sea breeze and sustainability mingle together to create a rural camping experience on a small eco-friendly farm. If surfing ranks high on the list for your trip, you’ll be well set with the local swell on several sandy beaches within 20 minutes’ drive. And if walking or cycling is your favourite pursuit, you can head out over the sand dunes (a great setting for watching the sunset) or walk right onto the lengthy Tarka Trail for a self-guided cycling and walking tour over Devon’s cliffs and coves. Friendly guests should find some good chat on site, as social and sensible souls can make use of the communal firepits (with wood available from the farm). And for when you feel like quality family time or gathering in a close-knit group, there are also portable fire troughs. With no electricity, this off-grid site will take you nicely back to basics, with just simple facilities such as toilets, sinks and hot showers on site. When you want to head into town, Braunton (five minutes’ drive) has several restaurants and a supermarket for food and a selection of pubs for a tipple. Surf shops, bike hire and guided nature walks with a local botanist are available too.

Liked: Lovely, quiet, back to basics site with everything we needed for a nice week away. There were no loud groups which was really appreciated. The owner is really friendly and it was great to have a firepit with a modest fee for logs.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: We love this site. Low hassle, high freedom and with just the right level of facilities for us. Big open space, camp wherever you like. Fire pits and wood available. Large, clean composting toilets and the showers were always hot.
It is also very convenient for the shops in Braunton but also the beaches from Saunton (5 mins) to Woolacombe (20 mins) or Ilfracombe (25mins).

Disliked: There is a composting toilet in both fields but the campervan field would benefit from a water point. It can also get a bit blustery if the wind picks up. The camping field is well sheltered but the campervan field is more exposed. Fine for the van, not so good for the kids in the awning.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Meadowsweet Farm. As advertised, camping is in the fields adjacent to the farming area and we enjoyed looking over the sheep, chickens and geese "next door". We were warmly welcomed by the Mark and his family who were also camping there for the season. Facilities basic but all that we needed as we were fairly self-contained in campervan. Compostable loos were clean (and not smelly) and showers in the shepherds hut had good pressure and were warm. Good location for Saunton and Braunton - although, if walking, need to find longer off-road routes via the dunes or the hills.

Disliked: washing up facilities very basic with no hot water.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Friendly and easygoing atmosphere.
Plenty of spaces for tents on a flat , grassy ground. No cars on the campingfield which is lovely for kids to play. Excellent location for Braunton Barrows, Saunton and Croyde. Showers in a carriage are quirky and warm. Compost toilets are clean. Firepits are provided and you can buy the wood. The site is managed with careful consideration for the environment. Lovely to see the animals. Marco is a friendly, approachable host.

Disliked: The field for the vans could do with a sink and watertap.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Very simple but nice campsite. Nice low-key atmosphere, relatively flat field with good quality grass and large hedgerows around. Composting toilets, but they were pretty good and clean, off-grid (gas powered) shower block which was warm. Farmer Marco was very friendly and helped me out with some spare tent pegs. Great location to access all of the beaches and Exmoor, with Saunton Sands only a 5 minute drive. Plenty of pubs and shops in Braunton, which a few minutes away by car.

Disliked: Adjacent to a main road, so not the quietest of campsites in terms of road noise. Some antibacterial hand gel would be appreciated at the toilets, in lieu of handwashing facilities.

Local attractions

Nature likes to spread its feathers in this area and it shows… almost on your doorstep are Swanpool Marsh Nature Reserve (15 minutes’ walk), which makes a nice contrast to clifftop curves of the north Devon coast and the steep drops along the Hartland Devon Heritage Coast (45 minutes' drive). The beach is calling too: at Saunton Sands (five minutes), paddleboarding, sailing and wakeboarding are common pursuits. And depending on your skill level, you could whip out (or rent) a surfboard or bodyboard for days at Croyde (10 minutes) or Woolacombe (20 minutes). Perhaps create a coastal bucket list, as this area harbours many National Trust sites, from the clifftops of Baggy Point (15 minutes) to the horsedrawn carriage collection at the peaceful neoclassical Arlington Court (35 minutes). Kids tagging along? They’ll likely have a roaring time at Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (half an hour). Find more rides, this time farm-themed, at The BIG Sheep (half an hour).
