  • CAMC members-only site on the eastern edge of Dartmoor National Park
  • Haytor Rocks 15 minutes’ drive; Exeter 35 minutes
  • Dog-walking field; grazing horses and sheep; launderette
No need to flip a coin to decide whether your next holiday should be all about the seaside or a hiking adventure, for at East Dunley Certificated Location you can combine both in one neat package. This one-acre site sits on a quiet farm outside Bovey Tracey (five minutes’ drive), a small town known as the Gateway to the Moor (Dartmoor, that is); and several beaches along the South Devon coast (such as Teignmouth) can be reached in less than half an hour. How’s that for a win-win? And another box to tick is ease of access: there are no narrow lanes on the route to the site. Featuring hardstanding-and-grass pitches on a slightly sloping field with views towards Dartmoor, East Dunley welcomes Caravan and Motorhome Club members – and their dogs. Your canine buddy should be kept on a lead at all times in order not to spook the farm’s permanent residents, which include other dogs, cats, grazing horses and the occasional sheep (plus wildlife such as owls and woodpeckers). Don’t worry, though: your four-legged companion still gets a chance to run around free and let off steam in an enclosed field. Amenities for humans include a modern and impeccably maintained toilet block, showers and a launderette. And while it might not be considered an amenity as such, the peaceful vibe of the place is certainly one of the perks of staying here. Bovey Tracey has plenty of restaurants and cafés, but the nearest pub is even closer (just over a mile away), in Chudleigh Knighton.

Local attractions

In Dartmoor National Park, Haytor Rocks (15 minutes’ drive) is a distinctive granite spur with 360-degree views from the top, which you can reach by climbing or via a challenging hike. A nearby visitor centre has leaflets detailing local walks, which take in 18th-century quarries and the Granite Tramway, built to transport Dartmoor granite down to Teignmouth. The South West Coast Path goes through Teignmouth (25 minutes), where you can also relax on the sandy beach, cycle along the seafront promenade or let the kids loose in the arcade on the Victorian pier. For pretty vistas of Teignmouth and the coastline, head to the Viewing Platform north of the town or to the marina on the River Teign. The Gothic cathedral in Exeter (35 minutes) houses splendid stained-glass windows and a medieval astronomical clock, while Northernhay Gardens, laid out just below Exeter Castle in 1612, has walkways and picnic lawns.
