  • Small, friendly and dog-friendly family-run site near the Devon coast
  • 15 minutes from Westward Ho! surfing beach
  • Take a boat trip, spot seals and dive off Lundy Island
Clifftop walks and river trips, rockpooling and stargazing, surf beaches and the simple pleasure of cooking up a feast with friends around a firepit… There aren't too many spots where you can tick all those boxes, but it's all there at Treyhill Farm. This comfortable and friendly smallholding is on a hilltop looking onto north Devon's finest countryside, about five minutes' drive from a pub with grub and the banks of the River Torridge. The Treyhill team know what they're about – and that's sorting everything out so you can have a truly comfy and chilled stay in these scenic surrounds. They care about the details: flowers and herbs around the grounds adding scent and colour; fresh tea towels in the washing-up station; secure bike storage for cycling types. Across the cobbled courtyard the shared bathroom is bright, clean and cosy, kitted out with a big hot shower and an armchair. You want to feast alfresco, smelling the salty tang on the breeze mingle with the woodsmoke as you sip a glass of wine? Go ahead, the folks at the farm will supply you with pots, pans, firewood and fire-starting kits… plus recipes if you need some tips on firepit cuisine. And a corkscrew. They're also mines of information on the local area and happy to help. Book ahead and they'll take you on a fish and chip run to Bideford in their boat, or cruise you down the Torridge spotting kingfishers and herons. Canine companions are welcome at Treyhill (and the same goes for the village pub).

Lucy's shepherd's hut

Liked: Lucy’s shepherd but was beautiful and so cosy. Alice was really kind getting me wood for the long burner although she was actually on her way out. The showers were actually a proper bathroom and warm. I was made to feel welcome and like nothing would be too much trouble, considering I was the only person staying there and had booked the day before arriving so had probably inconvenienced everyone this was lovely. Thank you to you all

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The site itself is lovely, the camping area isn't massive but this is great as it doesn't get too crowded. There is a ladder and rope swing from one of the trees for kids. There's also a pen at the back which has some chickens and peacocks in which our son loved. The dogs that live on site are very sweet and our son had a whale of a time entertaining them! There is a bathroom with a toilet and a lovely hot shower and then a separate toilet on its own. The farm has a wood stock which you can pay £8 for a supply of wood and a fire pit. They also have a microwave, cooking supplies like spare plates, cutlery, gas stoves, tea and coffee just in case you've forgotten anything which was a great touch. The owners are really lovely and definitely spend time trying to maintain the loveliness of the site. There's an extension lead in the bathroom and a plug by the microwave so you can charge phones etc which was really handy. Everywhere seemed to be within 12 minutes - whether this is the beach, pub or a supermarket (Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury's and Tesco all nearby). The washing up area has hot water and cold drinking water with tea towels, washing up liquid and brushes already provided. There is a bin here along with plastic, glass and can recycling.

Disliked: There is a porta shower which never seemed to get hot unfortunately even after waiting for it, but I used this because I couldn't be bothered to wait for the other shower. The pitch up filter showed that there is ice pack freezing but this isn't the case. The last point is a weird one, the farm is very remote and tucked away which is great, but the roads accessing the farm can be a little scary as they are single lane and we encountered a couple of vehicles coming the other way so had to reverse back to a point and allow them through. It wouldn't put us off returning but something worth mentioning.

From the manager: Hi hannah,

thank you very much for your lovely review. It was great having you all here :)

Regarding the shower i do apolgies for this, we will get that looked into. There are signs to state it takes some time to heat up but if it wasn't heating at all we will sort this out for future bookings. Im not sure why there is a filter for ice pack freezing, this may be a malfuction on pitchup side. However if you needed this, we would have been happy to put those in our freezers for you. We are always around to help. Yes we are in the country and most access is narrow roads, we are glad this has not put you off returning.

Thank you again and we look forward to welcoming you again in the future.

Best wishes,
alice and the team.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Treyhill farm, we really enjoyed our stay. Alice who manages it was lovely on arrival. Showed us around the campsite and facilities. Explained there was a honesty box if weather permitting for kindling and logs (unfortunately mother nature had other ideas) the showers were cleaned regularly always smelt clean as well, providing a bath mat, hairdryer and plenty of toilet roll which was really good. The washing up area was nice and clean. I liked the fact that it had back up stuff like plates cutlery as we all forgot things at times. It was lovely being able to help ourselves to fresh laid eggs every morning. Alice has a couple of dogs on site which really isn't a problem they just added to how nice everything was.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Shepards hut, toilet /shower, communication with the host. Tbh they saved my bacon as I turned up late in the day with the weather raining and very windy. I’d booked a pitch for a tent but after the long walk during the day and the weather I was in no fit state to put up even my two man tent. The farm owner made me a cup of tea while I spoke to Natalie to see if I could upgrade to something more substantial. Without hesitation she sorted it with her colleague even though they were not based on site. The shepherds hut was quaint with the rustic feel you would expect with everything you need inside (comfortable bed, two burner gas hob, kettle, small log burner etc). The weather continued to blow a gales but it didn’t matter as the hut was cosy and comfortable.
Nice sized room with shower cubicle, toilet and hand basin with plenty of room to get dry and changed. Didn’t get much time to look around too much but in the summer I would think the area I stayed on would be fantastic.

Orchard Beauty bell tent

Liked: Absolutely LOVED this campsite. It was wild and wonderful. My girls aged 3 and 11months could roam and play climb trees say hello to the chickens. Surrounded by lush country side and minutes to a great beach walk. The bell tent was spotless, cosy and comfortable. Can't wait to stay again.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely amazing.
Loads of room , so quite and everyone is so friendly.
Simon that is there was super friendly and let the kids help him walk the dogs and 2 puppys as well as feed the chickens and go on a pig hunt.

The farm dogs are lovely my kids loved every bit of it such a safe environment for them.

And we loved the camp fire.

Our tent fell down one day while we were out (ploe snapped on windy day) and Simon fixed it and taped it up for us such a amazing man.
As we didn't get to the camp site till 9pm and it was dark and we have 3 young kids.

Disliked: Nothing everything was great

Liked: Relaxed atmosphere, peaceful, good clean facilities

Disliked: Guests dogs were all kept on leads but the site owners dogs roamed free and got into bin bags. The other campsite guests had to clean up the owners dog poo.

Local attractions

Between the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Hartland Heritage Coast, this is true walking country. From Instow (10 minutes' drive) you can join the Tarka Trail, a wildlife-packed route inspired by the otter's journey in Henry Williamson's novel. Follow it to Westward Ho! (15 minutes from the site) and cool off in the sea; the farm owners also suggest surfers head here, instead of busier beaches further north. You can take lessons in the art of not falling off various watercraft at the Ultimate Adventure Centre in Bideford (15 minutes), while for further thrills, kayaking, laser tag and assault courses are also on the menu. For gentler times on water, head to the old riverside town of Appledore (15 minutes) for a boat cruise. If you fancy frying a fish over that firepit you can choose between the Torridge and Taw rivers as well as the big briny. Bideford is a popular launch point for sea fishing and for trips to Lundy Island: this wild outcrop in the Atlantic attracts all kinds of adventurers from seal spotters to wreck divers and has spectacular sunsets to round it all off.
