  • Laidback north Devon site 10 minutes' drive from the coast
  • Clovelly and The Milky Way Adventure Park within 15 minutes' drive
  • Firepits provided and barbecues welcome; local pub a mile away
A nifty north Devon location full of nature… and with plenty of space to relax and soak it all up. If that sounds like the real deal for your break, plot a course to Dyers Meadows Camping, in the Devon countryside about a mile from the village of Parkham and 15 minutes’ drive from Bideford. There are eight wonderful acres of wildlife haven at this site, but with only a small number of pitches you won’t have to share it with too many other guests. The whole thing is very laidback: kids and dogs are welcome, and you’ll be able to pick your own pitch, furnishing it with a gazebo, an awning and outdoor furniture as you wish. A firepit is provided for those classic campfire evenings, and you’re welcome to bring a barbecue for outdoor cookery if you like. If cooking’s not on the schedule, you could wander up to the village for a pub meal, or scrub up and set off for the gorgeous gastropub in Cranford, 10 minutes’ drive away (it’s listed in the Michelin guide, no less). There are toilets and showers on site to help you freshen up for the evening, whether you're heading out or gathering round the campfire to look up into the starry night skies. Being fairly close to the A39 means that getting around should be fairly simple – both arriving at the site and getting out to visit local attractions. The north Devon coast and the South West Coast Path are about 10 minutes’ drive away, and you’ll be within easy reach of some great family attractions and excellent beaches.

Liked: What a beautiful site! We made a last minute decision to go camping having not been for many years and staying here has reignited our love for it. The set up is perfect, there's so much room between pitches, the owners are lovely and really helpful. Excellent shower and compost toilets. It was lovely getting back to nature and being free to explore the rest of the land at our leisure. We will definitely be making a return visit!

Local attractions

What’s your idea of a great day by the coast? If it’s getting out for a nice long walk, set off to the nearest stretch of the South West Coast Path, about 10 minutes’ drive away. For beach time, one of the best in the area is Westward Ho! (20 minutes’ drive), which has decent surf as well as splendid sands for family days out. More of the coast? Explore the cute harbour village of Clovelly (15 minutes) or board a bot in Bideford (15 minutes) for an outing to Lundy Island, a place well known as a wildlife haven – walking, climbing and diving are popular pastimes here, and you can often join warden-led tours to explore more deeply. If you’ve got the kids in tow, plan trips to some of the nearby family attractions – rides and adventure play areas at The Milky Way Adventure Park (10 minutes), farm animals and sheep racing at The BIG Sheep (15 minutes) and cute little characters at The Gnome Reserve and Wildflower Garden (five minutes).
