  • Dog-friendly rural Devon site near several sandy beaches
  • A half-hour drive to Barnstaple and 25 minutes to Woolacombe
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed; footpaths and pubs nearby
Head to this north Devon site to pick your own spacious pitch across 12 acres of land with spectacular views over Exmoor, within 30 minutes’ drive of Barnstaple and 25 minutes of Woolacombe. This is a working farm, so you’ll share views of North Devon’s cliff-carved coastline with a host of farm animals, as well as the occasional wild pony, red deer or bird of prey. Near to sandy coves, woodlands and open moorlands, you'll quite possibly be ooh-ing and ahh-ing all day long. Plus, your dog won’t need to miss out on the countryside sensations either, as they’re welcome on a lead. Pick a plot among the unmarked pitches stretching over 10 acres of land and come prepped with grill recipes because barbecues are allowed on site. There are firepits provided to keep blazes safe and bins to keep the countryside litter-free. Toilets, showers and drinking water facilities are on site, too. Other perks of staying here include a pets corner where you can get your fluffy fix feeding the alpacas or watching the sheep and alpacas doing their thing and a picnic area where you can break up your day with a tasty packed lunch admiring the scenery. You may want to keep an eye out for cheeky peacocks and other wandering wildlife as you follow one of several trails direct from the site suited to bicycles or feet. There's a circular route past beaches, or if sand’s on your mind and you want it fast, it’s a 15-minute drive to the nearest sandy coves and surf schools. After all that walking, you won’t want to go hungry either… it’s easy to grab a takeaway here or fill up at several pubs, restaurants and shops in the neighbouring towns, including a Victorian inn within a five-minute drive of the site.

What customers say

This campsite offers stunning cliff-top views and direct access to the coast path. Visitors praised the clean, well-maintained facilities, including flushing toilets and warm showers. The informal, spacious site allows freedom to choose pitches, with fire pits available to hire. Alpacas on site are a popular feature. Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Loved the amazing views. Loads of space to pitch up. The bathroom facilities were amazing and Emma and the staff were amazing with keeping the facilities clean and ready for the guests.
Great to be able to hire a fire pit and get wood on site

Disliked It can get abit windy up there but that’s the trade off for the spectacular views you can enjoy.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked The views are amazing, lots of space if you choose away from the cliff edge area (seems most popular).

Fantastic toilets/showers - spotlessly clean and pretty! Lovely alpacas to say hello too in a pen on the field.

30 minute stroll to the pub , the hills back up are a killer though 🤣 (if the hunters inn bridge isn’t closed, otherwise it adds on another 30 mins)

Disliked Nothing to dislike

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Views are 10/10
Spacious pick your own pitches
Facilities had everything you needed (shower gels, abundance of toilet roll, washing up liquid)
Really is in the middle of nowhere and on a cliff, extremely peaceful and beautiful
Easy drive to lots of locations and viewpoints (recommend Ilfracombe Bay)

Disliked Nothing to dislike and not all the fault of the campsite - just some word of warnings that we think would be helpful for people/dog owners:

LOADS of flying ants nests all around due to the hills, we had to move pitch from one side of the field to the other as it was unbearable (August time)

Sheep roam free in these fields

Lighting is all solar powered, facilities are very dark once the sun has gone down especially the loos, so would recommend taking a good lantern or head torches etc.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked What a beautiful spot - fantastic views - large campsite but it was lovely and quiet even with quite a few campers there (we went in mid August) - lovely have the sheep roaming freely - toilet facilities were clean and well stocked. Couldn’t fault it.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Very relaxed camp site, views all round and amazing ocean views. We rented a firepit for the evening which really set the scene and the kids loved the place, lots of space to roam and chose a great spot without really being pitched up next to someone. Toilets, showers and wash facilities all great and never too busy. 10mins from Woolacombe beach.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Incredible view and location, exactly what we hope for. Clean and well stocked toilet and shower facilities. Super easy arrival at a time that suited us.

Disliked Check the weather before you go - if it's windy, you may struggle as this is on a cliff top and very exposed to the wind.
A little over-priced given that it's just a field.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The large open space with clean and plentiful facilities. Loose rules regarding where to pitch. Everyone was friendly. But the views topped it off.

Disliked Nothing.

Local attractions

Getting your seaside fix isn’t hard from South Dean Camping. Combe Martin (five minutes’ drive) is a very scenic spot, and all that scenery is extra special when you’re on a rented kayak or paddleboard just off shore. The village is home to the Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (10 minutes) too, a zoo and prehistoric park for just as an attractive day out. More coastal spots include the surfing hotspot at Woolacombe Beach (25 minutes), Ilfracombe’s busy harbour (20 minutes) or the Valley of Rocks (20 minutes) for all things coastal walks and dramatic sea views. For a little of the historic, settle in for the funicular railway in the villages of Lynton and Lynmouth (20 minutes) or potter around the country house and gardens at Arlington Court (15 minutes). Barnstaple (30 minutes), a gorgeous riverside town, is the go-to place for Tarka Trail bike rides. If it’s a walk you’d rather, Dunkery & Horner Wood National Nature Reserve (40 minutes) has a great loop among the ancient oaks.
