  • No-frills Lizard Peninsula camping with sea views near Porthleven
  • A 10-minute drive from Praa Sands beach
  • Dog-friendly grass pitches; pubs, shops and surfing 15 minutes’ walk
Fancy a relaxed sojourn near a gorgeous coastal village in Cornwall – and one with the option of surfing? In that case, it’s time to consider a stay at Treza Camping, an easygoing no-frills spot on the Lizard Peninsula that’s 15 minutes’ walk from both the pretty fishing harbour at Porthleven and its renowned surfing beach. Life on this site, on a working farm overlooking the sea, is indeed pretty chilled. There are no set pitches, so pick your favourite spot on arrival and claim it as your own. Bring torches and batteries as there’s no electricity on the camping field, but low-key facilities do include showers and toilets as well as washing-up sinks. This is a dog-friendly site, and your canine chums can join long family walks on Loe Bar beach (20 minutes’ drive) or hike segments of the South West Coast Path (15 minutes’ walk). And of course, with Porthleven beach being so close, this is a handy spot for families with kids keen to make sandcastles on the shoreline or splash around in the waves. Pick up supplies for the barbecue from Porthleven village (have a nose around the cute harbour, lined with cafés, while you’re there), or abandon the idea of cooking altogether and head down to a harbourside pub for fresh seafood suppers. And finally, one rule for time back on site: this is a peaceful rural area and no loud music is allowed, so please make sure the amplifier stays at home.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: So I had a great day at Kynance Cove and decided to stay over in a campsite with TedBoy my dog. Pitch up had the ideal spot, had a gorgeous meal at the Harbour Inn in Porthleven and then drove on up to the campsite a few minutes away. Was warmly greeted by the lady and then set myself up for the night. It was a beautiful warm evening with a beaut sunset and a beaut moon. Had a nightcap and watched the stars… quiet, felt very safe on my own, the facilities were very clean and fabulous. Will defo be back to spend longer down this beautiful part of Cornwall.

Disliked: Nothing!

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: No set pitches and lots of room with lovely views. It felt a really relaxed site and Wendy was lovely, and so welcoming. The location is great - 10 minute walk into Porthleven and lovely walks on the coastal path. I borrowed a fire pit for the evening which was a nice touch (no need to pay to rent one).
Plenty of toilets and showers.

Local attractions

Surfers, staying at Treza Camping gets you close to Porthleven beach (15 minutes’ walk) with consistent waves and recommended for experts. Novices can catch gentle waves at Poldhu beach (20 minutes’ drive), while Praa Sands (10 minutes) is another popular surfing destination. Non-surfers can take a dip off sandy Loe Bar (20 minutes), with a choice of sea on one side and a freshwater lake on the other. As well as being popular with outdoors fiends, this part of Cornwall packs a cultural punch: departure point for tours to the historic castle and gardens at St Michael’s Mount, pretty seaside Marazion (15 minutes) is also filled with indie art galleries and craft shops, while St Ives (half an hour) on the north coast is home to the famous Tate St Ives gallery. At the western end of the county is Porthcurno (45 minutes), host of musicals and plays at the open-air Minack Theatre (50 minutes). And of course kids get a look in too, with the chance to visit cute rescue seals at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary (20 minutes).
