When the surroundings are this spectacular, you don’t need to add lots of bells and whistles to make it a wonderful place to stay. As the name promises, Wild Camping at Trevaunance Cove is about five minutes’ walk from the gorgeous beach at Trevaunance Cove on the north Cornwall coast. The coast is so close here that you’ll be able to spend the evenings watching the sun set into the sea as you tend your barbecue and the mornings sipping your coffee while you gaze out at the crashing waves beyond. And, of course, you’ll be able to nip down to the beach whenever you fancy it – it’s a popular spot for surfers, families and dog walkers (dogs are allowed on the beach all year but need to be kept under control). Trevaunance Cove is a fabulous little spot, but (as you may have heard), there are rather a lot of those along the Cornish coast. You’ll be able to take in some of the nearby seaside scenery with a walk along the South West Coast Path, which you can pick up just by the cove, or get in the car for outings to places like Newquay and St Ives (on the north coast) or Falmouth and surrounds (on the south coast) – all within a half-hour drive. As a wild-style campsite, this is a simple place where the only facilities are portable toilets in the field (please note that means you’ll need to bring your own water for drinking and washing). The local village of St Agnes is just a few minutes’ walk away for pubs, cafés, a village shop and an excellent bakery.

Local attractions

It’s likely that you’ll spend at least some of your time here exploring on foot. For starters, of course, you’ll want to head to Trevaunance Cove (five minutes’ walk), where you can hire surfboards and kayaks or just have a chilled-out beach day. Pick up the South West Coast Path to take you to more lovely beaches and coastal views, or head inland to climb St Agnes Beacon (about 25 minutes’ walk from the site) for some gorgeous views over both sea and countryside. Looking to head further afield? Popular coastal spots like Perranporth (10 minutes’ drive), Newquay (25 minutes) and arty St Ives (35 minutes) can all be on the menu, or you can look out for quieter corners. For a dip into the area’s past, check out the former tin mines at Wheal Coates (five minutes) and Cornwall Gold and Tolgus Mill (15 minutes), or head to Truro (20 minutes) to visit the cathedral. Time for some silliness? Mega Slip and Slide Cornwall (10 minutes) fits the bill nicely.
