What customers say
This campsite is highly praised for its beautiful lake, offering free use of kayaks and boats, and opportunities for swimming and fishing. Visitors loved the private pitches, wildlife, and friendly, helpful staff. While many found the facilities clean, some noted issues with compost toilet smell and a lack of lighting in some areas. A few found the cafe pricey, and some experienced difficulties with check-in. Despite minor drawbacks, most reviewers highly recommend the site for a peaceful, nature-focused getaway.

Great for people who can manage with ‘wild camping’
Meadow non-electric grass motorhome pitch
Liked Site was lovely, quiet, peaceful (maybe expect for the 6am peacock) but was great to have them roaming around during the day! The swimming lake was an absolute bonus for my partner and son, when the rain came (which it did) this was the perfect place to spend the day, the boats/canoes etc are an added bonus!
Disliked No hot water anywhere for washing up which isn’t great for me especially when camping, having to boil water with a small gas kettle multiple times was annoying and I don’t recall seeing that online. The toilets being outdoor with no real privacy or being clean also only having 2 actual hot showers also very rustic was a major no for me, I saw online that it had toilet/shower blocks but I wasn’t expecting it to be as rustic/outdoors as they were. I think pictures online would help rather than just a description.

From the manager: We're so glad you liked our site and your family enjoyed swimming and boating with the canoes & kayaks.
We do have hot water at a couple of washing up stations but you're quite right that this isn't the case throughout. Creating hot water that is not strictly necessary (ie unlike showers of which there are 11) is a tremendous challenge across a 20 acre site without mains power (except in a few key locations like the barn and the cafe etc) so campers do very often have to go back to basics & produce their own the old fashioned way with a kettle! This is as we like to say a return to real camping - here's the relevant info from our website:
"Return to Real Camping
We want to offer our guests a really sustainable holiday. A return to real camping means the lowest possible impact on the land and environment - our tipi poles don’t even break the surface of the earth. Your footprint while here could only be bettered by a survival expert. You don't have to fly! a major bonus, and we source all our wood, fish and canvas locally and work with local people wherever possible.
We have flushing lavatories (one with limited wheelchair access) and hot showers situated at either end of the site, with an additional showers-only block more centrally located near reception. Our mains water comes from standpipes for your cooking and washing up which you will need to heat up back at your tipi - our basins are plumbed for cold water and are intended for handwashing, brushing your teeth etc rather than washing your dishes."
We have both composting and flushing loos as we know composters are not for everyone. We're sorry it was all a bit too rustic but thank you very much for taking the time to send us your review and private feedback. We're working on more showers coming soon!

We would stay again, lake was fantastic 👌
Non-electric grass tent pitch (secluded, XL)
Liked The private pitch was flat and had it's own picnic table, campfire and clean water tap. We booked an XL pitch and were able to fit on 3 tents. We could drive to the pitch to unload before parking in the car park, which wasn't far from the pitch. Great knowing there weren't cars everywhere so the kids could play safely around the site.
The compost toilets were cleaned daily and the facilities (flushing toilets, sinks and showers) were clean and had hot water. We were able to use the main reception to charge up power banks for phones and use the freezer. Also, the logs for sale on site were reasonably priced.
The lake was amazing and having kayaks and canoes to use was perfect. Highlight of the trip. The kids also loved seeing the peacocks, chickens, cows and the cat.
Disliked The Tipi kitchen was too busy for us to sit and eat but this was our own fault for not reserving a table on a bank holiday weekend with a family of 7!
Pretty much no data connection but I didn't even try the WiFi as was happy for the kids to be offline.

From the manager: Thank you so much for bringing your lovely big family to come and stay & giving us such an excellent 10 out of 10 rating! Yes the August Bank Holiday weekend tends to be the single busiest weekend of the year so that's why the cafe would have been so full. Thank you also for your thoughtful comments about the loos/sinks/showers and the freezer/logs for campfires etc. We're so pleased you all enjoyed the lake & the boats and the free roaming campsite wildlife! Hope to see you again next year!
Lovely place to stay with children, lots to do and very friendly staff
Meadow non-electric grass motorhome pitch
Liked Lovely camp site. The lake with boats available was just beautiful and great fun for the children. We swam, fished and enjoyed boating.
The cafe was also a highlight, as was just really beautiful and the food was great. The staff in the cafe and on site were very friendly and helpful.
Disliked There was a lack of toilets and showers and having the compost toilets right next to where you brushed your teeth and washed was a bit smelly and felt very exposed. Me and the children wouldn’t use and walked to the other toilet block.
There was also a lack of basic signage anywhere as to where drinking water/ how to use the compost loos and bins in the loos for any other disposables.
The cafe was gorgeous but did feel was a bit overpriced and no child size portions available.
Very small things really that could be fixed very easily and would be just perfect.

From the manager: Thank you for posting such fantastic pictures of your trip complete with boating, fishing, inside the cafe etc - it really gives the feeling of being there! Thanks also for your kind remarks about the staff, food at the cafe etc. All our standpipes offer drinking water as do the taps at the basins etc, we're sorry if this wasn't obvious so perhaps we'll take your tip and add it to the site map campers get given at check in. That same map should also show where all the facilities are located on site, and the nearest flushing loos/more showers etc if people don't like the composting ones...we are aware that they don't suit everyone! Child portions are a little more tricky but we try to have simpler options on the menu that are fairly priced.Look forward to seeing you again & many thanks for your feedback!
Our favourite place
Meadow non-electric grass motorhome pitch
Liked We love absolutely everything about this place, we visit every year and it’s by far our favourite place in the world. We fish, kayak, paddle board and swim. Surrounded by some of the best little coastal villages to visit as well.

From the manager: "Our favourite place"...! We're not sure how anyone can cap that as a testimonial! Thank you so very much and we'll really look forward to seeing you again next year when hopefully the weather will be kinder for all the outdoor pursuits your family loves!
Lovely place. Great for families
Meadow non-electric grass motorhome pitch
Liked The lake and the free use of kayaks etc.
The eco credentials.
Being shown to my pitch by quad bike
Disliked Not being given money back for cancelling one of the days

From the manager: Thanks so much for your overall 10 rating and we're so pleased you enjoyed your motorhome/campervan stay with us.
We're sorry about the refund policy but we have to be firm about this especially in peak periods as you can probably imagine. We'd love to see you with friends once again!
What a wonderful time we had.
Village tipi
Liked What a wonderful time we had. Such a special place so absolutely ideal for families. We loved our Tipi and found the site to be super special and the facilities top notch , friendly, so well organised and the wonderful Tipi Cafe. We were made to feel very welcome and will be back again soon and recommending to friends.

Meadow non-electric grass tent pitch
Liked Reasonable price, friendly and knowledgable staff, lovely food and coffee in cafe on site, great parking, lovely lake in sunny weather. Campsite spot, close to polzeath.
Disliked Smell of compost loo and Flushable loos not close to public camping, in tipi area only.
Recommend to friends Visit again
From the manager: Thanks so much for all your lovely comments but sorry you didn't like the composting loos - we know they're not for everyone! The nearest flushing block is about a 60 second walk from the main meadow camping area and there's another very nice lower loo block which is at the other end of the campsite so you should always be able to find the loo of your choice.
Out of this world
Non-electric grass tent pitch (large, secluded)
Liked The most beautiful campsite I've ever stayed on - the lake was just out of this world, with access to kayaks and boats free to use. Staff were lovely and super friendly.

We think the lake is beautiful too and the staff work really hard to make sure everyone feel welcome and have a great time - so it's really nice to let them know everything they do is appreciated.
Thank you and really look forward to seeing you again!
