  • Camping in the grounds of a former WW2 Spitfire base in Cornwall
  • Five minutes' drive from Perranporth; Newquay 20 minutes
  • Parachuting, flying lessons, skid car training and archery
Buckle up for adventure on land, sea and in the air at Spitfire Park, a 400-acre former RAF Spitfire base just off the South West Coast Path near Perranporth, Cornwall. With spacious grassy pitches for camping in a field next to an old control tower, this site has all sorts of adventurous activities to try out. During your stay, depending on when you're here, options may include parachuting, flying lessons, skid car training, archery, pistol shooting and hangliding; there are also dual-control cars where the over-12s can learn to drive in a safe and laidback environment. Activities aside, this is a handy place to park yourself: there are modern toilets, showers and washing-up areas for guests to use, as well as a café and a playground. The coast is within easy walking distance and the closest sandy beach is a five-minute drive down the road in Perranporth. After soaking up some sunshine by the water, head into the town centre for supermarkets, pubs, cafés and souvenir shops. Want to leave the car at home? You can also travel between the site and Perranporth by bus.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Great location.

Disliked: Very very run down site.
Caravans all broken all over the place.
No heating in the very old showers.
Lots of people living on the site full time.
Person that checked us in was very unhelpful, there's the field park anywhere. No site info, no real greeting.
Such a shame as could be a wonderful place.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: It was good watching the planes and stuff. It was good for a parkup.

Disliked: After I'd paid, I was informed showers and toilets were closed.. not a problem for me but could have been an inconvenience for some. Field has a few piles of scrap round the edges and didn't feel particularly secure. Only 3 others in the field.

Liked: All the staff that we met were fantastic and very welcoming.
Loved being so close to the coast path for some fantastic walks along the coastline.
Enjoyed the fact we just parked up in the field and enjoyed watching the small planes and parachuters. We were self sufficient so were more than ok with the basic facilities, as we never feel we need anything flash. We just loved being outdoors and were so fortunate to have super weather in October.
We hope to go again.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: I don’t know where to begin how amazed I was with this place! We arrived quite late (8pm ish) we checked in pretty quickly & was told we could pick a spot anywhere. The gentleman was lovely. He told us that 3 people were about to land (jumping from a plane) it was one of the most amazing things I’ve seen with the most gorgeous views !! The kids played on the play park until it went dark & we then had a bbq on our pitch & star gazed until late. We all had a good nights sleep and slept til late morning. We went across the cafe for breakfast & got told we could check out whenever we were ready (I was worried it was 12pm as we didn’t wake up til 11am) the breakfast was lovely & the staff couldn’t do enough to accommodate our fussy eaters. Absolutely amazing stay at a fab price & just an amazing place doing great things!!

Disliked: Cannot fault this place at all!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Smashing site. Level. It is based at Perranporth Airfield which is really busy! We spent all day watching parachute jumping, planes taking off and landing, and microlights taking off and landing. There is a bar onsite which does snacks. The staff are really friendly. The only thing that lets it down is the showers and toilets. They were really run down I'm sorry to say, hence only 4 stars. Apart from that, loved it!

Disliked: Showers and toilets weren't brilliant.

Local attractions

If nothing can beat a day at the beach, Spitfire Park has you covered: Perranporth's spacious beach is a five-minute drive down the road and has miles of golden sands, grass-topped dunes and a pretty seaside village next to it full of cafés and bars. Other resorts like Newquay (20 minutes) and Padstow (40 minutes) are also easily within your reach, as are spots on Cornwall's southern coast like Falmouth (40 minutes). You won't be scratching your head looking for family-friendly days out in this part of the world, as there are lots of kid-pleasing options about for you to choose from: Lappa Valley (20 minutes) with its vintage miniature railway, boating lake and mini golf is a more laidback pick, while for kids with endless energy there's also Camel Creek Adventure Park (40 minutes). Finding out about the local area is a breeze at the Royal Cornwall Museum (20 minutes), where you'll learn all about Cornwall's industrial heritage. For some natural history instead, Cornwall is well-known for its wealth of gardens – if you only have time to see one during your trip, make it the Eden Project (45 minutes).
