  • Camping in the grounds of a former WW2 Spitfire base in Cornwall
  • Five minutes' drive from Perranporth; Newquay 20 minutes
  • Parachuting, flying lessons, skid car training and archery
Buckle up for adventure on land, sea and in the air at Spitfire Park, a 400-acre former RAF Spitfire base just off the South West Coast Path near Perranporth, Cornwall. With spacious grassy pitches for camping in a field next to an old control tower, this site has all sorts of adventurous activities to try out. During your stay, depending on when you're here, options may include parachuting, flying lessons, skid car training, archery, pistol shooting and hangliding; there are also dual-control cars where the over-12s can learn to drive in a safe and laidback environment. Activities aside, this is a handy place to park yourself: there are modern toilets, showers and washing-up areas for guests to use, as well as a café and a playground. The coast is within easy walking distance and the closest sandy beach is a five-minute drive down the road in Perranporth. After soaking up some sunshine by the water, head into the town centre for supermarkets, pubs, cafés and souvenir shops. Want to leave the car at home? You can also travel between the site and Perranporth by bus.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Everything! A very casual campsite (which we love), just turn up and pick your own spot. Because this place is shared with the airfield / flying club, it comes with a cafe and bar (open 9am-8pm), and a small playground for the kids. In terms of camping facilities, the sinks and toilets were clean, we didn't use the shower but they looked fine, external sinks for dish washing with hot water, water tap, and rubbish and toilet disposal too. Everything you need.

Disliked Not an issue for us (it's why we came) but it is an active airfield so plenty of noise during the day, and very close to the coast so can be windy at times (again, wasn't an issue for us).

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Lots of space even if it was extremely busy with all the holiday makers. Really good cooked breakfast from the cafe onsite and great to watch all the skydivers getting ready to jump, packing their parachutes and the nervous jumpers ready to go with them. We then watched their plane take off and watched them jump from the plane and parachute all the way down and land right in front of us. It was an entertaining couple of days!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked That it was so close to Perranporth and not too far from St Agnes. The man behind the reception was friendly and the drinks were a reasonable price. Was very cheap but that reflected the facilities. My daughter loved the park and said that was her favourite thing about our weekend away (despite spending 3 days on the beaches).

Disliked The facilities are so basic that I would not want to stay for more than a few nights. We came home early as the showers were disgusting and two times we used them they just trickled out water. Not great when you’ve just spent the day on the beach. Maybe need to invest a bit of money in a better shower block/water pressure.

From the manager: Thanks for your review – we’re really pleased you enjoyed our location, friendly welcome, and reasonable prices, and it’s lovely to hear your daughter loved the play park.

I’m really sorry about the low water pressure during your stay. This was caused by building works going on in the nearby village, and as we’re in a small hamlet, it can sometimes affect us during busy periods. We’ve been in touch with South West Water to see if there’s a permanent fix, but unfortunately haven’t had any luck yet.

We’ve invested a lot this year in a new toilet and shower building, and our team cleans it at least three times a day in the busy season to keep everything fresh and tidy. We’ve also installed extra water tanks on site to try and help with pressure problems when the supply drops, but sometimes the outside works still have an impact.

Hopefully, when South West Water can come up with a better solution, you’ll be able to come back and experience the facilities as they’re meant to be

Unfortunately I don’t think I can leave a positive review.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We really enjoyed this park it’s very simple but our 2 year old loved watching the planes and parachute jumpers from our tent . Relaxed environment only a few rules of no noise after 10 and fires and bbqs off the grass . Got to pick where we wanted to pitch our tent and was nice to enjoy a cold beer from the bar in the sun .

Liked Very chilled atmosphere. The staff are lovely and down to earth not just corporate lackies. The food in the cafe is really good. The value for money is spot on. I'd recommend if you're in a campervan/motor home it's park where you like more or less and free wifi and nice hot showers.

Local attractions

If nothing can beat a day at the beach, Spitfire Park has you covered: Perranporth's spacious beach is a five-minute drive down the road and has miles of golden sands, grass-topped dunes and a pretty seaside village next to it full of cafés and bars. Other resorts like Newquay (20 minutes) and Padstow (40 minutes) are also easily within your reach, as are spots on Cornwall's southern coast like Falmouth (40 minutes). You won't be scratching your head looking for family-friendly days out in this part of the world, as there are lots of kid-pleasing options about for you to choose from: Lappa Valley (20 minutes) with its vintage miniature railway, boating lake and mini golf is a more laidback pick, while for kids with endless energy there's also Camel Creek Adventure Park (40 minutes). Finding out about the local area is a breeze at the Royal Cornwall Museum (20 minutes), where you'll learn all about Cornwall's industrial heritage. For some natural history instead, Cornwall is well-known for its wealth of gardens – if you only have time to see one during your trip, make it the Eden Project (45 minutes).
