Good views, good walks and plenty of local surf spots – tickles your fancy? Porthcothan Retreats is an adults-only glamping site with units for two people, set in a splendid spot between Padstow and Newquay. This north Cornwall retreat has lush surroundings indeed. It’s just 100 metres from Porthcothan beach, well-liked for its nice sand, low tide and grassy dunes. That also means that you’re in a prime spot for hiking along the South West Coast Path (for miles if you so wish…). All units are self-catering and come with a garden and barbecue so that you can spend as much time in the open air as you like. The gardens are fenced, also adding some extra privacy. While it’s easy to prepare your own breakfast, lunch and dinner, Porthcothan beach has a beach shop and tea rooms selling fresh food, coffee and ice creams. For laidback dining, there are pubs and restaurants in the village of St Merryn, five minutes’ drive away. Padstow, 15 minutes’ drive away, has some very popular restaurants. There is also a farm 20 minutes’ walk away with food, drinks and entertainment throughout the summer. Handily, Porthcothan Retreats is on a local bus route. The bus stop is right outside the gate and goes to Padstow in half an hour and Newquay in 40 minutes, stopping off at various points along the coast.

Tides Reach shepherd's hut

Liked: Everything was spot on, from booking, arrival and departure, managed to find the place very easily, the place was very clean and tidy, close to the beach, with walking paths, and stunning views, the staff always available, managed to greet one of them while I was out and about, very pleasant and friendly.

Foxes Cove shepherd's hut

Liked: Property was clean and well laid out, with everything we could need. It was peaceful and relaxing to stay in. We enjoyed the fire chimney outside and the great choice of beaches nearby. It was also a bit protected from the wind, which was quite strong.

Disliked: The gate at the top of the drive.
