Cornwall – unplugged. This is what awaits members of the Caravan and Motorhome Club at Little Trenarrett, on a working farm on the eastern fringes of Bodmin Moor. There are only a few pitches at this peaceful rural spot, which pretty much guarantees that you’ll have plenty of privacy, not to mention oodles of space. The pitches are positioned on a south-facing hill – and therefore slightly sloping. The trade-off, of course, is that you'll get spectacular views of the moors and the Tamar Valley. Dogs are welcome, too, but please keep them on a lead while on site; when they need a little exercise, they can run around free in the adjacent two-acre field, which is securely fenced. And of course, there are plenty of dog-friendly walks to be had in the vicinity. A public footpath running right along the site is lined with colourful wildflowers in season; the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (40 minutes’ drive) has lots of circular trails that take in wooded valleys, medieval chapels and ancient quarries; and the South West Coast Path can be accessed at Boscastle (25 minutes). The site has no electric hook-up, nor any hot water. However, it’s not all back-to-basics here, since there is a toilet block and drinking water, plus a grey-waste disposal point, chemical waste disposal and recycling facilities. The shops and restaurants of Launceston are a 15-minute drive away, and the nearest supermarket is at the petrol station on the A30 (10 minutes).

Local attractions

There’s lots to do on Bodmin Moor, including strolling through the conifers in the Halvana Plantation (10 minutes’ drive), trekking alpacas through the hills or climbing up Showery Tor (both 20 minutes) for far-reaching moorland views. The area is also peppered with archaeological sites, such as the Trippet and Stannon stone circles (20 minutes and 30 minutes’ drive respectively). Tintagel (25 minutes), on the north coast of Cornwall, is renowned for its links to King Arthur. After exploring the castle ruins, overcome any fear of heights you might have to cross the Tintagel Castle Bridge and check out Merlin’s Cave, a seafront grotto that is accessible only at low tide. The South West Coast Path takes you past spectacular inlets along rugged clifftops. Frame the perfect seascape by looking through Ladies Window, an aperture in a granite cliff; or see if you can spot the seals at the bottom of Pentargon Waterfall (both 25 minutes).
