  • Peaceful dog-friendly site a couple of miles from Bodmin Moor
  • A 20-minute drive from Tintagel Castle, Jamaica Inn and Boscastle
  • Within five minutes’ drive of a pub and 10 minutes from a farm shop
Keen to find a peaceful base that makes it easy to dart off to quiet beaches, hiking trails and historic sites? Take a look at Little Meadow Camping, a well-maintained site a couple of miles from the edge of Bodmin Moor and 20 minutes' drive from the Cornwall coast. Those who like a good hike can tackle trails like Brown Willy and Rough Tor on Bodmin Moor, both 40 minutes’ drive away, or drive 40 minutes east to the many scenic spots of Dartmoor National Park. For trips to the coast, bookmark beaches like Crackington Haven and Widemouth Bay or historic spots like Tintagel Castle and Boscastle. All four are within 20 minutes’ drive of the site. Guests are welcome to light up barbecues at this site, and you're likely to find some great things to grill (plus all the accompaniments and/or picnic supplies) at local farm shops – the closest is about 10 minutes' drive from Little Meadow Camping. For major supermarkets and shops, try Bude (25 minutes’ drive) instead. If you need a caffeine fix, you should find it at the cute coffee shop in Altarnun, 10 minutes’ drive away. For historic meals out, Jamaica Inn, a famed smugglers’ inn on Bodmin Moor, is 20 minutes’ drive away. This dog-friendly site has a nice set of facilities including a communal shower block with two showers, two toilets and sinks, as well as a washing-up station near the shower block.

Local attractions

Something local first? Trethorne (15 minutes’ drive) has a golf course, as well as a family-friendly attraction with bowling, a climbing wall and pony rides for those with kids who need to let off some steam. Davidstow Airfield and Cornwall at War Museum (five minutes), a historic airfield with an RAF museum, is also nearby. For an outing that involves some gin or rum instead, Treguddick Distillery (15 minutes) runs tours of its distillery. Keen to stay outdoors as much as possible? Golitha Falls (half an hour), just off the Two Valleys Walk, is a stunning waterfall surrounded by ancient woodland. Adrenalin Quarry (45 minutes), a flooded quarry with zipwires, an aqua park and a clifftop quarry, is a good shout for the daredevils among you. For a gentler time, you should get plenty of fresh Cornwall air wandering the recreated Victorian village at Morwellham Quay (45 minutes) – at least until you reach the copper mine tour. For the pleasure of simple rides like teacups and miniature rollercoasters, head to Camel Creek Family Adventure Park (40 minutes).
