  • A 20-minute drive from St Ives, Scilly ferries and St Michael's Mount
  • A five-minute drive from a pub and a farm shop
Surf beaches? Coast walks? Simple outdoor down time with peace and seclusion thrown in? Ride up to The Old Stables Campsite, a back to basics and back to nature spot in Cornwall, five minutes’ drive from the top surf beach of Gwithian Towans. There's plenty of wide open space here, so guests can laze about and take in the views. Amenities include showers, toilets, a washing-up area and a tap for water. However simple you like your stays to be, it’s handy to know that the site's a five-minute drive or a 15-minute walk from the village of Connor Downs where there’s a pub with food. A farm shop and restaurant selling and serving up fresh local produce is two minutes’ drive away; for more serious stocking up, it’s a 20-minute drive to Penzance. Hit the beach five minutes’ drive away for surfing, bike hire and to join up with the mighty 630-mile South West Coast Path.

Disliked: TOTAL WASTE OF £90!’.

If you want a campsite that is chilled and has a nice feel then don’t book. When I arrived, I was told that my 13.5 year old couldn’t stay in his own tent, this was not the decision of the uptight owner. I had also brought a lot of fridge food with me to be told on arrival that there was no fridges!I was told to put it all in a cool box!needless to say, I wasn’t going to risk getting food poisoning so I had to throw all of my food away-what a waste of my hard earned money!.

I didn’t get a nice feeling from the atmosphere of the site and there were signs all around stating what campers “can’t do”-very uptight!.

My final straw was when my son and I struggled to put our gazing up for an hour in the wind, once finally up, “Mike” very rudely came over and said “you need to move it as it is a tiny bit over our boundary (which Jayne had originally told me that I could use!!). I wasn’t going to continue the stay for the rest of our planned trip so we packed up at 6am the next morning as we felt very uncomfortable.

Unfortunately, my usual campsite isn’t open till July so I thought I would try this one l, never again. If you want a very chilled, welcoming atmosphere, try Far View in Mullion, totally recommend!Has such a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

From the manager: Many thanks for taking the time to write a review, some of which is not entirely factual.

The cost of your booking was actually £69.
You have omitted to say that you contacted me on the 5th of April and asked if you could move your booking, to arrive the 9th instead of the 12th. Despite it clearly stating on your booking confirmation that Bookings cannot be amended within 21 day(s) of arrival, I moved the opening of the site forward one day to allow you to come earlier on the 10th, only to find that once agreed you informed me that is was because of the weather forecast.

I politely informed you that we don’t usually move bookings due to bad weather and I also wanted to make you aware that if you came earlier there wouldn’t be many on site and I didn’t want you to feel vulnerable on site as an adult and child, as shown below:

“Please be aware, that we don’t normally change bookings due to weather the forecast and there will only be you and one or two others on site”

You further told me that you were well aware that we don’t change bookings due to the weather, but was just enquiring if you could change your dates!

With reference to your comment about the cool box. We do not advertise as having a fridge on site anywhere on Pitchup and I didn’t just tell you to put it in a cool box, I went and got you one of ours and gave you frozen ice blocks so you could refreeze yours.

In regards to your son sleeping in a tent on his own. It actually is our decision as owners of the site and we choose to do this for safeguarding reasons. It is clearly written in the Terms and Conditions which you would have had at the time of booking with Pitch up. Had you declared and paid the £1 per night for the extra tent at the time of booking, I would have questioned this before your arrival and given you the option to cancel your booking with a full refund.

Additional terms
Children under the age of 16 are not permitted to occupy any tent unaccompanied.

Your final straw of over pitching, I am well aware of the boundaries on our field. We advertise 8 metres and actually give around 10 to allow for the guy ropes. In fairness to you the boundaries are not yet marked for the season, but I physically showed you where your boundary was and you choose to put some of your gazebo and guy ropes well over.

Although you didn’t enjoy your time with us, we really hope you have a lovely stay at Far View in Mullion.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The welcome by the friendly owners, who were willing to help with any of our questions about the local area and bus timetable. The site is really close to the bus stop for all local attractions, which made it easy to get to St Ives and Penzance. The pitch was flat and in a wide open space, so we didn’t feel hemmed in by other campers. All the usual facilities were available and in clean and good condition.

Disliked: There was a little noise from the road, but really this wasn’t a problem. There is no footpath along the road, which made the walk to the bus stop feel a bit hazardous. However, on the return journey, the bus drivers were all very helpful and dropped us off at the gate to the campsite. The facilities were none permanent structures.

From the manager: Many thanks for taking the time to write a review. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us and found the facilities clean. It’s great that you used the local bus service, which recently has been rerouted and now actually goes past our gate and will stop to pick up and drop off passengers, which saves the short walk to the bus stop.

Unfortunately we do have some road noise at times when the wind is in a certain direction and the road is busy, but glad you didn’t find this a problem and you will recommend us to your friends and visit again in the future.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Office: Very welcoming on arrival, all information given.
Tent pitch: Very spacious, level, excellent area for children, very well marked and area clearly defined.
Toilet/showers: Very clean, very user friendly, excellent facilities
Whole site: Very well marked out, good segregation between tents/campers etc.
Cost: Very reasonably price for the area and it was the nightly rate which was a deciding factor in us choosing this site over others.
Food: Food vans (breakfast/pizza etc) are available at various times. We didn't use these but they looked amazing and we definitely factor in using them on another stay.
For a personal reason we asked to move to a different tent pitch - this request was accommodated as there was space available. It was no hassle for the owners and it made us feel very valued and listened to.

Disliked: As it is a working farm, the cockerel is very loud from approximately 0430 each day. This is to be expected on a working farm but I would have thought it would be closer to 0600/0630 than 0430. Nothing to do with the site or the owners but just something to be aware of when booking.

From the manager: Many thanks for taking the time to write a review. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us and found us welcoming, the facilities clean and felt that we were reasonably priced for the area.

We will always try to accommodate our guests wherever possible and appreciate that you brought the issue to our attention and we could help you.

Thank you for acknowledging that we have no control over the cockerel and agree with you that he is an early riser, but glad that this wouldn’t put you off staying with us again.

Local attractions

The beaches along this stretch of Cornwall’s coast are top spots for watersports, nature walks and the simple pleasures of splashing in the sea. Walk the coast path up to the more secluded sands at Godrevy (a 10-minute drive), then onwards to spot seals from Godrevy Point. For days away from the waves, there’s go-karting to be had at Hayle as well as animal encounters and indoor play at the Paradise Park and Jungle Barn. For something more artistic, make for St Ives (20 minutes) for a wander round the Tate Gallery and the studio of sculptor Barbara Hepworth or go underground on a walk through Cornwall’s industrial history at the Geevor Tin Mine (half an hour). Penzance is your place for boat trips: fishing, seal spotting and dolphin watching as well as the daily ferries to the Scilly Isles (you can take the helicopter for a quicker trip). Day trips to this subtropical island group are very doable, with many visitors hiring bikes to explore the beaches or find spots to go snorkelling with the friendly grey seals. For a closer island experience, take a 20-minute drive to Marazion then walk the cobbled causeway to St Michael’s Mount. It might involve a boat ride at certain times of day, so check ahead, but however you arrive you’ll find a treat on this island with its medieval chapel and castle, winding paths and nature-filled gardens.
